What it actually is
A harmonic chart multiplies every longitude by a whole number and reduces the result back into the circle. In the 5th harmonic, everything is multiplied by five; in the 7th, by seven.
The point is what that does to aspects. Any aspect based on dividing the circle by five — a quintile, a biquintile — becomes an exact conjunction in the 5th harmonic. Aspects that are almost impossible to spot on a normal wheel become the most obvious thing in the chart, which is the entire reason the technique exists.
The 4th harmonic gathers the hard aspects, the 5th the quintile family, the 7th the septiles, the 9th the noviles. The 9th is also the Vedic navamsa by another route, which is a genuinely interesting overlap between two traditions that developed separately.
⚠️ Harmonics amplify error as well as signal. In the 9th harmonic every position is multiplied by nine, and so is every inaccuracy — a birth time out by four minutes moves the natal Ascendant a degree and the 9th-harmonic Ascendant nine. High harmonics on an uncertain birth time are not worth reading.
How Umbriel computes it
Each longitude is multiplied by the harmonic number and reduced modulo 360. That is the entire operation, and it is done on the full-precision positions rather than on rounded degrees — rounding first and multiplying after would put a 9th-harmonic position most of a degree out. The harmonic angles are derived the same way, which is why the tool flags high harmonics when your birth time is uncertain: the multiplication scales the uncertainty exactly as it scales everything else.

What is a harmonic chart?
Your chart with every longitude multiplied by a whole number. Aspects based on dividing the circle by that number turn into conjunctions, which makes them easy to see.
What is the 5th harmonic used for?
It brings out the quintile family — aspects of 72 degrees and its multiples — which are traditionally associated with skill, craft and a particular kind of talent. They are very hard to spot on an ordinary wheel.
Is the 9th harmonic the same as the navamsa?
They arrive at closely related places by different routes — the navamsa is a Vedic divisional chart, the 9th harmonic a Western multiplication — and the overlap between two traditions that developed independently is part of why the harmonic is interesting.
Do harmonics need an exact birth time?
