What it actually is
A draconic chart is your birth chart with the zodiac's starting point moved. Instead of measuring from 0° Aries, everything is measured from your own North Node — so the node becomes 0° Aries by definition and every other body shifts by the same amount.
⚠️ Because everything shifts by the same amount, the draconic chart has exactly the same aspects as the chart it came from. Every conjunction, square and trine is preserved. This is not a flaw in the technique and it is not a bug in the calculation: it is the arithmetic, and it is the single most misunderstood thing about draconic work. What changes is the sign and house each planet falls in, and nothing else.
Which is why the interesting part is not the draconic chart on its own but the draconic chart against the natal one — a draconic planet landing on a natal planet is a genuine contact, and it is what practitioners actually read. Umbriel draws both and the comparison between them.
⚠️ One thing Umbriel refuses to do: when comparing two people draconically, each chart is rotated on its own node. Re-centring both on the same node is an easy mistake that produces a perfect-looking result which is really a no-op — the two charts move together and every apparent contact was already there.
How Umbriel computes it
Every longitude has your North Node's longitude subtracted from it, and the result is wrapped back into 0–360°. That is the whole calculation, and it is the reason the aspects are preserved exactly. The node used is the one from your own chart, computed for your birth moment — not a mean value for the year. In draconic synastry each person's chart is rotated on their own node, which is worth stating because rotating both on a shared node is a common shortcut that quietly turns the whole comparison into a no-op.
What's in your result
- The full draconic chartEvery body re-measured from your North Node, drawn as a wheel.
- Draconic against natalThe bi-wheel comparison, which is where the technique is read.
- Draconic anglesAscendant and Midheaven in the draconic frame, when your birth time supports them.
- Draconic synastryTwo people compared draconically — each chart rotated on its own node, never a shared one.
Common questions
What is a draconic chart?
Your birth chart measured from the North Node instead of the spring equinox. The node becomes 0° Aries and every other body moves by the same amount.
Why does my draconic chart have the same aspects as my birth chart?
Because it must. Everything rotates by an identical amount, so every angular relationship is preserved exactly. Only the signs and houses change. Anyone claiming a draconic chart reveals new aspects has made an arithmetic error.
What is the draconic chart used for?
It is usually read against the natal chart rather than alone — a draconic planet falling on a natal planet is the contact people look for. Interpretations vary widely and there is no settled tradition.
Do I need a birth time for a draconic chart?
For the planets, no. For the draconic Ascendant and Midheaven, yes, since those depend on the birth time in the ordinary way.
Should I use the true node or the mean node?
Umbriel uses the true node, computed for your birth moment, because the node genuinely wobbles and the mean value smooths that away. The difference is usually under two degrees, but it is your chart's zero point here, so every position inherits it.
Is draconic astrology traditional?
No. It is a twentieth-century technique, popularised largely in the 1970s, and there is no long tradition of interpretation behind it. That is worth saying plainly: it is interesting and it is young, and the readings around it are still being argued out.
Is the draconic calculator free?
Yes — the chart, the natal comparison and draconic synastry, with no account.
