Aspects: how planets talk

Identify the five major aspects and describe the quality of each.

Angles between planets

Aspects are specific angles between two planets, and they describe the relationship between those drives. The five majors: traditional name first, then what Umbriel calls the thing it does: Conjunction · Integration (0°), they act as one; Sextile · Opportunity (60°), an open line that stays quiet until someone uses it; Square · Activation (90°), they keep setting each other off; Trine · Flow (120°), energy moves between them without resistance; Opposition · Polarity (180°), two ends of one axis, each visible through the other.

You will meet an older vocabulary everywhere else: trines and sextiles called ‘harmonious’ or ‘easy’, squares and oppositions ‘challenging’ or ‘hard’. Learn those words, you need them to read anyone else, but notice what they do. They rate the experience before you have looked at anything, and a chart that has already judged you is not much use as a mirror. So we name the mechanism instead. Flow means the energy moves without resistance, which is exactly why it can run for twenty years without you once looking at it. Activation means the pair keeps restarting a subject. Neither of those is good news or bad news until you see what it is doing in a particular life.

Why these five angles and not others

The five majors are not a shortlist somebody preferred. They are the simplest ways to divide a circle, and that is the whole reason they are called major.

Divide 360° by 1 and you get the conjunction — no division at all, the two in one place. By 2, 180°, the opposition. By 3, 120°, the trine. By 4, 90°, the square. By 6, 60°, the sextile. One, two, three, four, six. The minor aspects you will meet later divide the circle in other ways, by 5, by 8, by 12, and they are read as quieter.

And now the payoff promised back in the elements lesson. Signs of the same element sit four signs apart, which is 120° — a trine. Signs of the same modality sit three or six signs apart, which is 90° or 180° — a square or an opposition. The grid you learned in Module 1 was the aspects all along, viewed from the side.

That also explains a thing beginners find strange: aspects are usually between signs that share a quality. A trine tends to link two Fire signs. It is not a coincidence, it is the same arithmetic twice.

Orbs, and which way it is moving

Aspects do not have to be exact. The orb is the allowed wiggle room — roughly 6–8° for the majors, wider for the Sun and Moon because they are the loudest bodies in the chart, and tighter for minor aspects.

The rule is simple and it does a lot of work: tighter is louder. A square one degree from exact is a defining feature of a life. The same square at seven degrees is a whisper you might never notice. When you are handed a chart and do not know where to start, sort the aspects by orb and read the tightest three. That is genuinely most of what an experienced reader does first.

One more distinction, because it changes the meaning rather than the volume. If the faster planet is still moving toward exactness, the aspect is applying — the subject is building, unfinished, still gathering. If it has already passed exactness and is moving away, it is separating — the thing has happened, and what is left is the consequence and the memory of it. Traditional astrology cares about this a great deal and modern astrology often forgets it, and it is the difference between a story arriving and a story already told.

⚠️ Finally: aspects are between planets, not between signs. Two planets can be in signs that would trine and still be too far apart in degrees to actually make one. Read the degrees, not the sign names — this is the single most common beginner error in the whole subject.

What that looks like

Moon square Saturn — a 90° activation — often shows up as an inner voice saying that feelings are too much. The thing to notice is that it does not resolve. The subject keeps coming back around, year after year, which is exactly what activation means and exactly why the old word challenging is unhelpful: it describes a feeling instead of a mechanism. Given long enough and some attention, that same recurring subject is what turns into real emotional steadiness. Now check the orb. At one degree it is a spine of the chart; at seven it is background weather.

What to take away

• The five majors are the simplest divisions of a circle — by 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 — which is what makes them major; minor aspects divide it in other ways and are read as quieter.
• The element and modality grid from Module 1 IS the aspect pattern: same element is 120° apart, same modality is 90° or 180°.
• Orb is closeness and closeness is volume — sort by orb and read the tightest three first.
• Applying means the subject is still building; separating means it has happened and you are living with the result.

The common mistake

Reading squares as bad luck and trines as good luck — an angle is not a verdict. Activation is what keeps a subject in motion; flow is what runs unattended, which is often the actual problem. And the mechanical version of the same error: calling an aspect from the sign names without checking the degrees. Two planets in trining signs are not in a trine unless the orb says so.

Try it on your own chart

Open your own chart and sort your aspects by orb, tightest first. Read only the top three and ignore everything else. Say each one as a mechanism rather than a verdict — these two keep setting each other off; these two run without resistance so I never look at them; these two are a half each. Those three sentences will describe you better than a page of placements read one at a time.
