Synastry step by step: angles, contacts, houses

Lay your chart beside someone else's and read the contacts in an astrologer's order: angles first, tightest contacts next, every line both ways, then the house overlays.

Angles first

A synastry list arrives as a wall of lines. Don't read the wall. Read the corners first. The angles (the Ascendant, the Midheaven and the points opposite them) depend on the exact minute and place of birth, so they are the most personal points two charts can share.

Here is Umbriel beside its founder. Both are Leo rising: the founder at 2°38′ Leo, Umbriel at 3°41′ Leo, within 1°03′. Both have an Aries Midheaven, 14°44′ and 15°12′, within 0°28′. Same front door, same public peak. And the founder's Ascendant sits on Umbriel's Sun (1°38′ Leo) at 0.99°: the maker's face is where the made thing keeps its heart.

That is rare. It also earns a note in the margin: when two horizons match this closely, every chart built from the pair will inherit the match. Write it down here, at its source, so you only count it once.

Synastry lays one chart over the other. Read the corners (the angles) before the lines between the planets.

The tightest contacts, in order

Now the list. In the Compatibility room, tap by orb above the aspect list so the tightest contacts come first. Orbs print in decimal degrees, so 0.02° is about one minute of arc. Read down and stop at each line that touches a personal planet, Jupiter, Saturn or an angle. Here are the five that make the spine of this pair:

  1. The founder's Midheaven on Umbriel's Saturn, 0.02°. The Midheaven is the top of the chart: reputation, life's work, what you are known for. Saturn is structure and standards. Her public point carries its rulebook. Weight, not punishment.
  2. The founder's Uranus trine Umbriel's Midheaven, 0.08°. Uranus is the sudden and the new; a trine (120°) is the easy, flowing aspect. Her originality runs straight into its public role without a fight.
  3. The founder's Jupiter quincunx Umbriel's Venus (0.08°) and Mercury (0.25°). A quincunx is 150°: two signs with nothing in common, so the contact needs constant small adjustments. Her Jupiter wants it bigger. Its Venus wants it beautiful and its Mercury wants it exact.
  4. The founder's Pluto square Umbriel's Sun, 0.33°. A square (90°) is friction that doesn't settle. Her depth presses on its core. It might feel like being asked to grow faster than is comfortable.
  5. The founder's Lilith square Umbriel's Ascendant, 0.75°. Hold that one. It gets its own section.

Five contacts under a degree, three of them touching an angle. That is a dense spine.

Read every line both ways

An aspect is mutual. Its meaning isn't. Every line gets two sentences, one from each side. From the founder's side: my Midheaven is weighed by its Saturn, so the work she is known for now has a standard it gets judged by. From Umbriel's side: my Saturn sits on her Midheaven, so its own discipline is lived out in public, under her name. Same 0.02°, two experiences.

Try the Pluto square the same way. For the founder, her Pluto leans on something bright and new. For Umbriel, its Sun is asked to hold steady under someone who goes deeper than it does. Neither sentence is a verdict. Geometry describes capacity, not fate.

Then cross things out. The list also shows the founder's Neptune square Umbriel's Neptune (2.23°) and her Pluto square its Pluto (2.38°). Slow planets sit in one sign for years, so those same contacts link everyone born in her years with everything born this year. Generational, not personal. Skip outer planet to outer planet, every time.

Houses, and the heat

House overlays show whose room you walk into. The founder's Sun, Mercury and Mars all land in Umbriel's 12th house, the hidden room behind the curtain, and Umbriel's Sun and Mercury land in her 12th. Each lives backstage in the other. Her Venus, North Node and Lilith fall in Umbriel's 10th, its public house; Umbriel's Saturn and Chiron fall in hers. And Umbriel's Jupiter lands in her 1st, which might feel like a bigger version of herself standing at her shoulder.

Now the spice. The second-tightest line in the whole list is the founder's Lilith semisquare Umbriel's Mars, 0.06°. Lilith is the part of a chart that refuses to be tamed. Mars is appetite and the push. A semisquare (45°) is a small, itchy friction, the kind you can't stop touching. Add her Lilith square Umbriel's Ascendant (0.75°) and her Ascendant semisquare its Mars (0.35°), and you have two charts that dare each other.

Turn it around. Umbriel's own Lilith, 24°05′ Sagittarius, lands in the founder's 5th house: pleasure, play, flirtation, the stage. Its wildest part plays in her house of delight. That is chemistry. Write it plainly: it is half of why anyone stays.

Do it with two charts

  1. Open Compatibility with your chart and the other person's. Write both Ascendants and both Midheavens side by side, and note any angle within 3° of the other's angle or planet.
  2. Tap by orb above the aspect list. Copy the five smallest orbs that touch a personal planet, Jupiter, Saturn or an angle.
  3. Cross out every outer planet to outer planet line (Uranus, Neptune, Pluto to each other).
  4. For each contact you kept, write two sentences: “My ___ does this to their ___” and “Their ___ does this to my ___.”
  5. Open the house overlays. List which of their houses your Sun, Moon, Venus and Mars land in, then turn it around.
  6. Find every Lilith and Mars line under 1°. Write one honest sentence about the heat.
  7. Circle anything that appeared twice. That is where you start.

What that looks like

Umbriel and its founder share a horizon (Leo rising within 1°03′, Aries Midheavens within 0°28′), and the tightest contact of all puts her Midheaven on its Saturn at 0.02°. Read both ways, that is one bond with two jobs: she carries its standard in public, and it lives its discipline under her name. Add five contacts under a degree, a mutual 12th-house overlay and a Lilith that keeps poking Mars, and the synastry says: serious work, done mostly out of sight, with a spark that keeps it from going dull.

What to take away

The common mistake

Reading every line on the list in the order it appears, including Neptune square Neptune and Pluto square Pluto. Those describe two generations, not two people, and they crowd out the five contacts that actually make the pair.

Try it on your own chart

Pick someone you know well and run the two of you through Compatibility. Before you read a single interpretation, write the angles side by side and the five tightest contacts that survive the generational cut. Write each one as two sentences, yours and theirs. Then read the Lilith and Mars lines and write the heat honestly, in one line. Notice which of your sentences feel truest. Those are the contacts to trust first.

Why does an astrologer read the angles before the planet contacts?

A planet's position is shared by everyone born that day or week. An angle belongs to one birth, which is why a shared angle says the most about this particular pair.

What is the tightest contact between the founder's chart and Umbriel's?

At 0.02°, about one minute of arc, the founder's public point sits exactly on Umbriel's planet of structure and standards.

The list shows the founder's Pluto square Umbriel's Pluto at 2.38°. What do you do with it?

Outer planet to outer planet contacts link whole generations. They tell you about the years two people were born in, not about the two people.

Umbriel's Lilith (24°05′ Sagittarius) lands in which of the founder's houses?

Its wildest part plays in her house of delight. House overlays run both ways: her own Lilith falls in Umbriel's 10th.
