The line everything is measured along
Say what the ecliptic is, why every planet is found within a narrow band of it, and why a chart describes a planet with one number rather than three.
A solar system that is nearly flat
Before the zodiac, before the houses, there is one line, and everything in astrology is measured along it. It is called the ecliptic, and it is simply the path the Sun appears to trace through the sky over a year.
It is a line rather than a scatter because of how the solar system was made. It condensed out of a single spinning disc of gas and dust, and it kept the disc's plane. Earth still orbits in that plane, and so does everything else, near enough. Looking out from inside a flat system, you see a flat system: a line.
So the planets never wander far from the Sun's path. The Moon strays about 5°, Mercury up to 7°, Venus about 3°, Mars about 2°, Jupiter and Saturn between 1° and 3°. A band roughly 8° either side of the line holds almost the entire cast. That band is the zodiac — the word means something like “circle of little animals”, after the constellations that happen to lie along it.
The name ecliptic comes from eclipses, and it is a clue you will cash in twice. Eclipses can only happen when the Moon is on the line rather than 5° off it, which is why they cluster and why they need the lunar nodes. Hold that; it comes back.
One number, not three
A position in the sky needs two numbers, the way a position on Earth needs latitude and longitude. Astrology almost always uses one of them and quietly drops the other.
Ecliptic longitude is how far round the line a body is: 0° to 360°, measured from one agreed starting point. That single number is what a chart is reporting. “Mars at 14° Cancer” means longitude 104° — three completed signs of thirty degrees each, plus fourteen. Every sign-and-degree in your chart converts back to one number like that, and the engine works in those numbers the whole time.
Ecliptic latitude is how far off the line a body sits, north or south. The Sun's latitude is zero by definition, because the ecliptic is the Sun's path — the Sun is the one body that is always exactly on the line. Everything else is a little off it, and a chart does not tell you by how much.
That is a real simplification with real costs, and this course comes back for what was dropped rather than pretending it was not. Declination and out-of-bounds planets, parallel and contraparallel, antiscia, and the whole business of eclipses are all latitude returning through the back door.
Why an aspect can be an angle at all
Here is the payoff, and it is the reason this lesson is first rather than interesting.
Because every body has been reduced to a single number on a circle, the relationship between two bodies is also a single number: subtract one from the other. That subtraction, and the handful of round answers that get names — 0°, 60°, 90°, 120°, 180° — is the whole of aspect theory. If astrology carried full three-dimensional positions, “square” would have no simple meaning, because two objects in space are not at an angle to each other in any obvious way.
So the flattening is not laziness. It is what makes the geometry speakable. But you should know exactly what you bought and what you paid.
What you paid is this: a conjunction means the same longitude, not the same place in the sky. Two planets can be listed as conjunct and still sit a hand's width apart to the eye, because one of them is several degrees off the line. Pluto is the extreme case — its orbit is tilted 17° — and it is one of the reasons it never quite fitted in with the others, in astronomy or in a chart.
What that looks like
On a clear evening you might see Venus and Jupiter looking like they are almost touching, and a chart for that night will say they are conjunct. Fine. But the reverse happens too: a chart can report the Moon conjunct Pluto to the degree while the two are far enough apart in the sky that nobody looking up would connect them. The chart is not lying. It is measuring one number — how far round the line each one is — and on that number they match. The gap you can see is the latitude astrology set aside.
What to take away

- Reducing the sky to one number per body is exactly what makes aspects possible, because the relationship between two bodies becomes a subtraction.
The common mistake
Picturing the zodiac as a strip of constellations you could point at, and picturing a conjunction as two planets sitting next to each other in the sky. The zodiac is a measuring ring laid along the Sun's path, and a conjunction is an agreement about one number. Both can be true of things that look nothing like each other when you look up.
Try it on your own chart
Open your own chart and turn three placements into single numbers. Count completed signs from Aries, multiply by thirty, add the degrees: Taurus is 30, Leo is 120, Capricorn is 270. Do it for your Sun, Moon and Rising. Now subtract the smallest from the largest. That difference is the only thing an aspect between them has ever measured, and you have just done by hand what the rest of this course automates.

Conjunction is an agreement about longitude only. Pluto's orbit is tilted 17°, so the two can share a longitude and still be a long way apart to the eye. This is the price of flattening the sky to one number — and the reason declination exists as a separate technique.
