Of Sextiles
Sextiles: the signs two apart, half friends.
[p. 63] From Signs Alternate little Friendship's due,Squint they look, and with a partial view; The Line that measures them obliquely drawn,Thro' various Angles goes not freely on,Many its stops, in every other SignThe Angle closing still diverts the Line;Forward it darts, but soon it meets a Bound,And six times broak, it leisurely creeps round:From Taurus stretcht to Cancer, thence it bendsTo Virgo's Sign, and thence to Scorpio tends;Cold Caper meets it next, and thence it goesTo Aries, upward then to Taurus flows,Where, whence it first began, we find the Figure close.
[p. 64] The Other, for the Round contains no more,Meets all the Signs the Second mist before; Then passing those already sung, go on,To all the Others let the Lines be drawn,And equal Angles make the other Hexagon. You see their Site, and thus Oblique they lie,And view each other with a squinting Eye,Too near, because thus plac'd, for mutual Aid,Which freely flows in Lines direct convey'd.High in the Concave Signs Alternate lie,The Lines that mark them almost touch the Sky;And therefore far from Earth thro' distant wayThey dart their Influence with a feeble Ray.
And yet some Intercourse in these we find,For Signs Alternate are alike in Kind;In the first Hexagon six Males are found,With Females only is the Second crown'd:Thus Nature works, and, when the Place denies,Sex makes Agreement, and unites the Skies,

The text is Thomas Creech's 1697 verse translation, checked word by word between three scans of the same type (the 1697 printing, the 1700 printing and a third copy). The long s is printed as s; every other spelling is Creech's. Pages are cited as the 1697 printing numbers them. The portrait is William Marshall’s engraving of Lilly from the front of the 1659 printing (Wellcome Library, public domain).
