Venus is traditionally read for what draws you and how you express warmth; Mars for how you pursue it. Between two charts, the contacts these two make are the ones most often read for attraction. Venus to Venus for shared taste and values, Venus to Mars for the pull between them.

There is a piece of arithmetic worth knowing before you start. Venus is never more than 48° from the Sun, so two people born within a few weeks of each other will have Venuses close together almost automatically. A Venus conjunction between near-contemporaries is often a fact about your birthdays rather than about the two of you. Tight Venus contacts between people born at different times of year are the more telling ones.

And Venus is only one axis. Attraction is not the same question as living together, which is a Moon conversation, and neither is the same as whether two lives fit, which is most of the rest of the chart. A Venus reading is genuinely useful for what it covers and genuinely partial. Umbriel gives the contacts with their orbs and does not turn them into a score, because a percentage on this axis would imply a completeness it does not have.

This page runs the same two-chart comparison as the synastry calculator and reads the attraction contacts within it. Both charts are computed by the same engine, and the aspects between them are found with orbs of 8 degrees for conjunction and opposition, 7 for trine and square and 5 for sextile, with 2 degrees more on the major aspects when the Sun or Moon is involved. In the score, Venus with Mars and Venus with Sun feed the romance and passion sub-scores, Venus with Venus and Moon with Venus feed harmony, and Pluto with Venus feeds passion. Each contact is weighted by how close it is out of 8 degrees, and a trine, sextile or conjunction counts as easy while a square or opposition counts as hard. The score is one number for the whole pair, not a Venus-only number, and it comes from a fixed formula on a few contacts, not from a measurement. Venus averages about 1.16 degrees a day, so its position and its contacts change very little across a day, and the birth time matters far less here than for the Moon or the Rising sign. The accuracy page checks Mercury, Venus and Mars against published ingress dates and gives under 0.2 degrees. Any Rising contact needs both birth times, and Umbriel leaves it out when either is missing.
