What it actually is
A Davison chart takes the midpoint between two birth moments and the midpoint between two birth places, and casts an ordinary chart for that time at that spot. Two people born in 1985 and 1991 get a chart for 1988; two people born in Lisbon and Warsaw get a chart for somewhere in between.
The distinction from a composite matters. A composite is an average of positions and corresponds to no moment that ever existed. A Davison is a real sky — the planets in it were genuinely in those places at that time, which is why some astrologers trust it more and read it as a nativity for the relationship.
⚠️ The midpoint in time can be startling. Two people born far apart in years produce a Davison chart for a date when one of them was a child and the other had not been born, and the chart's own date sometimes carries more weight in the reading than practitioners intend. It is a construction, whatever the sky was doing.

How Umbriel computes it
The midpoint moment is the true arithmetic midpoint of the two birth instants in universal time, and the midpoint place is computed on the sphere rather than by averaging latitude and longitude as plain numbers — which matters for pairs separated by a lot of longitude, where naive averaging can put the midpoint on the wrong side of the planet. The chart for that moment and place is then cast by the ordinary engine, so a Davison is a normal chart in every respect except how its moment was chosen.
