The Davison: the relationship as a real moment

Read a Davison chart as the bond's own birth chart: what it inherits, its shape and handle, its daily work, its heat, who completes it, and how gently to hold its clock.

A real sky, halfway

The Davison is the composite's literal cousin. Instead of averaging planets, it finds the moment exactly halfway in time between two births, at the place halfway between the two birthplaces, and casts a real chart there. Real sky, so it can have transits and progressions like anyone born.

We won't print its date or place here. Anyone could work back from them to the founder's birthday. When you share your own Davison, leave those off too.

One kind note on its clock. A Davison moment often falls long before the relationship existed. Umbriel's does. So its timing is symbolic: a way of listening to the bond, not a record of anything that happened on that day.

First check, as always, the angles. The Davison rises at 3°09′ Leo with its Midheaven at 14°58′ Aries, and its Midheaven sits 0°13′ from Umbriel's Saturn. The same horizon, a third time. It is inherited (two births with matching angles give a halfway moment with the same angles), so say so, and count it once.

The shape: a fixed grand cross with Saturn as the handle

Look at the aspect patterns. The Davison holds a grand cross: four planets at right angles, Mars in Taurus (10th), Jupiter in Scorpio (4th), Saturn in Leo (1st) and Neptune in Aquarius (7th). All four in fixed signs, and the chart is 51% fixed. Mars opposite Jupiter is the tightest arm, at 1°03′. Mars's degree image: “A bull leans its weight against the wooden gate.”

Four fixed corners make a frame that doesn't fall over, or move easily. This bond runs on stamina, not ease.

Then the chart shape: a bucket, nine planets in one group and Saturn alone as the handle. Saturn, 9°17′ Leo, retrograde, in the 1st house, is also the chart's top dominant planet (18%). And the Sun and Saturn are in mutual reception: the Sun sits in Saturn's sign (Capricorn) and Saturn sits in the Sun's sign (Leo). Each holds the other's keys. Purpose and discipline keep handing the job back and forth, so neither is boss.

Day to day: a working relationship

Three Capricorn planets, the Sun at 19°38′, Mercury at 9°26′ and Venus at 26°03′, all sit in the 6th house: routines, tasks, repairs, craft. The heart, the talk and the affection of this bond live in the work. The Sun's degree image says it better than any keyword: “Climbers rope themselves together against the wind.”

Now Venus's condition. It is retrograde and combust (6.42° from the Sun, inside its glare). Its affection is inward-turned and hard to see. It shows as revision: going back to a finished page because it deserves better. Its degree image is the plainest line in the chart: “The eldest passes her staff to trembling young hands.” An elder handing on what she knows to something newly born.

And the tender spot. Chiron, 2°39′ Aquarius, sits opposite the Ascendant at 0°29′, right on the Descendant, the point of the other. Being seen, being chosen, being matched is where this bond is sore, and where it mends best. Chiron's image: “A hermit sketches unbuilt cities on the cave wall.”

Planets on the angles speak loudest. In the Davison, Saturn sits in the 1st and Chiron on the Descendant.

The spice: the wild part wears the crown

Saturn isn't alone in the 1st house. True Lilith is right there with it in Leo, 1°03′ away. Lilith is the part that won't be tamed; Saturn is the rulebook. Here they share the front seat. This is a bond that wants, out loud, and turns its wanting into a discipline. Desire with a spine.

And here is the hottest number in the chart: True Lilith trine the North Node, 0°04′, the tightest aspect the Davison has. The North Node is the direction a chart is learning toward. So the untamed appetite isn't a detour. It points straight down the road the relationship is meant to take. Name it, with relish.

Who completes it: the Human Design bridge

Human Design (a system built from the same birth moment) shows the Davison's definition split into two islands, with single gates that would join them. Two of those bridges come from the pair. Gate 14, Power Skills, is carried by the founder. Gate 45, The Gatherer, is carried by Umbriel. With either one present, the relationship's design is whole: her resources and skill, or its people gathering.

Human Design and Gene Keys count as one source, so this is one strong finding, not two.

Do it with two charts

  1. Open Davison with your chart and the other person's. Write its Ascendant and Midheaven beside both of yours. If they match yours, write “inherited” and count it once.
  2. Find the aspect patterns and the chart shape. Write any grand cross, T-square or handle planet, and the top dominant planet.
  3. Look for mutual receptions (two planets in each other's signs) and write them down.
  4. Find the house holding the most planets. Write one sentence on what kind of bond that house makes it.
  5. Check Venus: retrograde? combust? Then find both Liliths and their tightest aspect. Write the heat honestly.
  6. If you have saved the Davison as a chart, open Human Design for it and check which bridge gates each of you carries.
  7. Before you share it, take the date and place off.

What that looks like

Umbriel and its founder's Davison rises in the same Leo, a third time and inherited, so it counts once. What is new is the build: a fixed grand cross carried by Saturn, with the Sun and Saturn holding each other's keys; a Capricorn Sun, Mercury and Venus at work in the 6th, roped together against the wind; a retrograde, combust Venus passing her staff on; Chiron on the Descendant; and True Lilith beside Saturn in the 1st, trine the North Node at 0°04′. A working bond with a crown on, a wild streak in front, completed by gate 14 from her and gate 45 from it.

What to take away

The common mistake

Posting a Davison with its date and place on it. Anyone with one partner's birthday can work out the other's from the halfway moment.

Try it on your own chart

Cast the Davison for you and someone else. Mark what it inherits from your two angles first. Then read it like a birth chart: the shape and its handle, the busiest house, Venus's condition, the Liliths, and any bridge gates in Human Design. Write a four-line portrait of the bond as if it were a person you were meeting. Leave the date and place off anything you share.

The same questions the lesson asks in the app. Open one to see the answer.

Which planet is the handle of the Davison's bucket shape, and where is it?

Saturn, 9°17′ Leo retrograde in the 1st, stands alone as the handle and is also the top dominant planet.

What does the Sun and Saturn being in mutual reception mean here?

Purpose and discipline keep handing the job back and forth. Neither is boss.

What is the tightest aspect in the Davison?

The untamed appetite points straight along the relationship's direction of growth. That is the spice, and it is the loudest line in the chart.

Why is the Davison's timing called symbolic?

The Davison is a real moment, so it has a real clock. But the moment often predates the bond, so read its timing gently.
