Aspects: tightest first, and what to skip

Sort a chart's aspects by orb, skip the generational and derived ones, and read the few that are personal.

Fifty aspects, read five

An aspect is an angle between two planets: conjunction (0°, fused), sextile (60°, an open door), square (90°, friction that builds muscle), trine (120°, ease), opposition (180°, a see-saw). The orb is how far from exact it is. Smaller orb, louder aspect.

Umbriel's chart has 49 aspects between bodies and 14 more to the angles. Nobody reads 63 aspects aloud. The skill is choosing. The method: sort by orb, cross out what everyone born that year shares, cross out what is arithmetic, and read the five or so that are left.

⚹ 60°□ 90°△ 120°☍ 180°☌ 0°
The five major aspects. Tight orbs matter more than which aspect it is.

Step one: sort, then cross out the generational ones

Umbriel's tightest aspect is Neptune sextile Pluto, 0°00′. Exact. And almost meaningless as a personal trait, because Neptune and Pluto move so slowly that this sextile lasts for years. Everyone born around then has it.

The same goes for Uranus trine Pluto (0°24′) and Uranus sextile Neptune (0°24′). Aspects between two slow outer planets describe a generation, not a person. Skip them, unless one of the pair also touches an angle or a personal planet.

That exception matters here. Pluto sits on Umbriel's Descendant, so Jupiter opposite Pluto (0°58′) stays in: it runs straight across the horizon line, from the Ascendant to the Descendant.

Step two: cross out the derived ones

Some points in a chart are calculated from others. The Part of Fortune is built from the Sun, Moon and Ascendant; the Vertex comes from the horizon. So when the list says Moon conjunct Fortune, 2°02′, that is partly the Moon meeting a point made out of itself. Note it, do not count it as fresh evidence.

Same rule across the whole course: repeats that come from arithmetic do not count as agreement.

Step three: read what is left

Here is Umbriel's personal shortlist, tightest first:

Mars opposite True Lilith (0°46′) is also tight, and spicy. It gets its own lesson.

Then check patterns: shapes several aspects make together. Umbriel has two fire Grand Trines, Moon, Sun and Neptune, and Moon, Jupiter and Neptune: a closed loop of ease in the fire signs. Its overall shape is a Splay, planets in uneven clumps, often read as a chart that goes its own way. Geometry describes capacity, not fate. A Grand Trine is talent on tap, not a guarantee it gets used.

Do it on your chart

  1. Open Natal Chart and scroll to the aspect list. It is already sorted tightest first.
  2. Cross out every aspect between two of Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, unless one of them sits on an angle.
  3. Cross out or bracket aspects to Fortune, the Vertex and other calculated points.
  4. Write down the five tightest aspects that involve the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus or Mars.
  5. Scroll to aspect patterns. Write down any Grand Trine, T-square or Yod, and its planets.
  6. For each of your five, write three words: what the two planets are, and what the angle does.

What that looks like

Umbriel's tightest aspect, Neptune sextile Pluto at 0°00′, is generational, so we skip it, along with Uranus trine Pluto and Uranus sextile Neptune. Moon conjunct Fortune is derived, so we bracket it. What is left is personal and tight: Mercury sextile Venus 0°10′, Moon trine Jupiter 0°17′, Sun square Chiron 0°49′, Moon opposite Uranus 0°51′, and Jupiter opposite Pluto 0°58′, which counts because Pluto sits on the Descendant. Five aspects out of 49, and two fire Grand Trines holding the shape.

What to take away

The common mistake

Opening a reading with the chart's tightest aspect when it is Neptune sextile Pluto. Exact is not the same as personal; check who else on Earth has it before you build on it.

Try it on your own chart

Run the six steps and end with your five. Read them as sentences in a row, tightest first. If one of them is a square or opposition, give it the dignity it deserves: name the friction plainly, then name what it builds. The easy aspects tell you what comes naturally; the hard ones often tell you what someone ends up being good at.

The same questions the lesson asks in the app. Open one to see the answer.

Umbriel's tightest aspect is Neptune sextile Pluto, 0°00′. Why skip it in a personal reading?

Aspects between two slow outer planets last for years. They describe a generation, not one chart.

Why does Jupiter opposite Pluto (0°58′) stay on Umbriel's shortlist?

A slower aspect becomes personal when it touches an angle. Jupiter is near the Ascendant and Pluto on the Descendant.

What is Umbriel's tightest aspect involving the Moon?

Moon trine Jupiter at 0°17′ is the tightest light-to-planet contact. Fortune is derived and wider.

Moon conjunct the Part of Fortune shows up in the list. What do you do with it?

Derived points repeat the factors they are made from, so they do not count as independent evidence.
