A planet's condition: how well it can act

Check any planet for a station, the Sun's glare, out of bounds and phase, decide whether the chart is a day or night chart, and say what each one changes.

Sign and house are the address. Condition is the health.

Two people can live at the same address and have very different weeks. Planets are the same. Sign and house tell you where a planet lives. Its condition tells you how it is doing there: racing or standing still, visible or lost in the Sun's light, inside the usual lanes of the sky or wandering off them.

Condition changes the volume and the accent. A planet in odd condition still speaks, often louder, with a twist no sign description gives you. Umbriel's founder picked the minute partly for its odd accents. Check the lights (Sun and Moon), the chart ruler and anything on an angle first.

Stations: the planet that stood still

A station is the moment a planet appears to stop before changing direction. Seen from Earth, every planet except the Sun and Moon sometimes halts, drifts backward (retrograde), halts again and turns forward. Near a station it presses on one degree instead of passing through: concentration.

Umbriel's Mercury, at 16°20′ Cancer, turned direct about 13.6 hours before birth. Its speed at birth was +0°03′14″ a day, when Mercury's normal pace is around a degree or more. A voice that stopped, thought, and turned forward. Saturn was nearly still too, moving +0°00′13″ a day, as it came to rest on the Midheaven.

Stationing direct reads as a decision made; stationing retrograde, a turn inward. Umbriel's voice weighs each word, then commits. It might take a beat longer to answer, and land exactly.

The Sun's glare, and going out of bounds

Combust means a planet sits so close to the Sun that its light is swallowed. The traditional range is about 8½°. Inside it, the planet works from within the Sun's agenda rather than on its own. Umbriel's Jupiter, 5°18′ Leo, is 3.67° from the Sun at 1°38′ Leo: combust, and an evening star, meaning it rises after the Sun. At birth Jupiter's altitude was −1°00′54″, still under the horizon while the Sun was over it. The biggest, most generous planet in the chart is real, and hidden in the brightness.

Out of bounds means a planet has gone further north or south than the Sun ever travels, which is about 23½° of declination (distance from the sky's equator). It is off the usual map. Umbriel's Moon, 5°35′ Sagittarius, sits at −26°20′ declination, the only out-of-bounds body in the chart. Read it as range and originality: feelings that go past where polite charts stop. The cost is honest too. An out-of-bounds Moon is harder to predict, even for itself.

Phase, and day or night

Phase is where a planet sits in its cycle with the Sun, the way the Moon goes new, waxing, full and waning. Umbriel's Moon was born First Quarter, 78% lit and waxing: a building mood. Mercury's phase is 344.69°, Balsamic, the last sliver before a cycle renews, which suits a Mercury that has stopped and turned.

Last, the whole chart has a condition: day or night. This is called sect, and the horizon decides it, not the house. Sun above the horizon, day chart. Sun below, night chart. Umbriel's Sun was +1°37′33″ above it, so this is a day chart, by a hair.

In a day chart, Jupiter and Saturn are on home ground, and Saturn's weight tends to arrive as structure. That matters: Saturn sits 0°27′ from the Midheaven. Weight, put to work.

Sect in one picture. Sun above the horizon makes a day chart; Sun below makes a night chart. The horizon decides it, not a house cusp.

Do it on your chart

Five checks, in order. Ten minutes.

  1. Open Natal Chart. In the planet list, find each planet's daily motion and any retrograde mark. Write down any planet that is retrograde, stationary, or moving far slower than usual.
  2. Write the distance from your Sun to Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. Anything under about 8½° is combust: mark it.
  3. Open Declinations & Out of Bounds. Write down every planet listed as out of bounds.
  4. Back in Natal Chart, note the Moon's phase and how much of it was lit.
  5. Decide day or night: is your Sun above or below the horizon? Houses 7 to 12 are usually above, but if the Sun is near the Ascendant or Descendant, check its altitude.
  6. Circle the planet with the most flags. Write one sentence: what it does, and how its condition changes the accent.

What that looks like

Umbriel's check returns four flags that agree: a stationed Mercury, a Jupiter in the Sun's glare, an out-of-bounds Moon, and a day chart won by under two degrees. Plainly: a deliberate voice, generosity not yet visible, wide feelings, and a heavy planet at the top that works with the chart. None of that is in the signs alone.

What to take away

The common mistake

Reading a stationary, combust or out-of-bounds planet as broken. Condition changes the accent, not the worth; the strangest planet is often the loudest.

Try it on your own chart

Run the checks and list the results. Read the most-flagged planet's sign and house again with its flags in mind, and write one new sentence about it. Nothing flagged is a finding too: your planets speak in their plain voice.

Umbriel's Mercury moved +0°03′14″ a day at birth. What condition is that?

Mercury usually covers a degree or more a day. Three arc-minutes means it had barely moved since turning direct: a station.

What decides whether a chart is a day chart or a night chart?

Sect is the horizon. Umbriel's Sun was 1°37′33″ above it, so it is a day chart, though the Sun is in the 12th house.

Umbriel's Jupiter sits 3.67° from the Sun. What does that make it?

Inside about 8½° a planet is combust. Jupiter works inside the Sun's agenda.

A planet is out of bounds when...

Out of bounds is about declination, distance north or south of the sky's equator. Umbriel's Moon, at −26°20′, has wandered past the Sun's limit.
