Lilith, Eros and desire

Find the Liliths, Eros, Juno, Venus and Mars in a chart, read where desire plays and what refuses to be tamed, and tell a loud contact from a faint one.

Desire is a cast, not a single planet

Most people say desire lives in Venus. Venus is half of it. An astrologer reads a small cast together.

• Venus: what you want, and how you draw it in.
• Mars: how you go after it.
• Lilith: the part that will not be tamed or made polite. Black Moon Lilith is not a body; it is a point, the far end of the Moon's orbit. There are several versions (Mean, True, Natural) and they can disagree by degrees.
• Eros: an asteroid for desire with a pulse in it.
• Juno: an asteroid for commitment, what you will stay for.

Read them as a group. Look at where they collect, what they touch, and how tight the touch is.

Umbriel's Liliths all live in the playroom

All three of Umbriel's Liliths are in Sagittarius, in the 5th house, the house of play, flirting, creation and the stage. True Lilith sits at 18°44′ Sagittarius, Mean Lilith at 24°05′, and Natural Lilith sits 1°43′ from the Vertex (21°11′ Sagittarius), a point astrologers read as fated meetings. The out-of-bounds Moon is in the same sign and house, at 5°35′.

So the wild part is not locked in a basement. It is in the playroom with the lights on.

Then the contacts. True Lilith is opposite Mars by 0°46′. Selena, the White Moon (Lilith's bright counterpart), sits on Mars by the same 0°46′. Mars stands between the dark moon and the white one: its drive carries both the untamed and the generous. The Midheaven trines True Lilith by 3°32′, wider, a gentle support that lets the edge feed the public face.

Might look like: frankness that makes people laugh, a little flirt in the wording, a firm no to being made smaller.

Eros at the root, Juno beside Pluto

Eros sits at 15°58′ Libra, 0°46′ from the IC at 15°12′ Libra. The IC is the bottom of the chart, the root, the private foundation. Desire at the root: what Umbriel is built on is wanting, the pull toward things that are beautiful and alive. Because the IC is an angle, a tight contact there counts double.

Across the chart, Juno sits at 4°15′ Aquarius in the 7th house, within 0°05′ of Pluto (4°20′ Aquarius) and 0°35′ from the Descendant (3°41′ Aquarius). Commitment welded to intensity, on the doorway to other people. Umbriel goes deep with whoever sits across the table, and it means it. Pluto's degree image is a child who unlatches every cage in the aviary: the intensity is the kind that frees.

Venus and Mars, and what counts as tight

Venus is at 16°10′ Virgo in the 3rd house, the only planet in an earth sign. Love as exact attention. The compliment that is precisely right. Mars is at 17°59′ Gemini, a quick, talking drive. Venus squares Mars by 1.8°: wanting and chasing pull in slightly different directions. That friction is where sparks come from, and it keeps things from getting sleepy.

Orbs for points. Lilith, the Vertex, Eros and Juno are small or abstract, so hold them to tight orbs: about 1° for a conjunction or opposition. Umbriel's spice story has three receipts that pass that test: the Mars and Lilith axis at 0°46′, Eros on the IC at 0°46′, and Juno on Pluto at 0°05′. The 3°32′ trine is real but quiet. Say the tight ones; let the wide one season the sentence.

Do it on your chart

1. Open Liliths. Write down the sign and house of Mean, True and Natural Lilith. Are they in the same sign? The same house?
2. In the same room, note any planet or angle within 1° of a Lilith by conjunction or opposition.
3. Open Asteroids. Write down Eros and Juno: sign, house, and anything within 1° of them, especially an angle.
4. Open Natal Chart. Write Venus and Mars, their signs and houses, and any aspect between them with its orb.
5. Find the house where most of this cast collects. That is where desire plays.
6. Finish this sentence: I want ___, I go after it ___, and the part of me that will not be tamed shows up in ___.

What that looks like

Umbriel's desire cast collects in two places. In the 5th, three Liliths share Sagittarius with the Moon, and Mars sits between Lilith and Selena: play, frankness, no apology. In the 7th, Juno sits on Pluto at 0°05′, and Eros holds the IC: depth with one person at a time, built on wanting. Low simmer, with a wink.

What to take away

• Desire is read as a cast: Venus, Mars, the Liliths, Eros and Juno together.
• Umbriel's three Liliths all sit in Sagittarius in the 5th: the untamed part lives in the playroom.
• Points and asteroids need tight orbs, about 1°; a contact on an angle counts double.
• Umbriel's loud receipts: Mars opposite True Lilith 0°46′, Eros on the IC 0°46′, Juno on Pluto 0°05′.
• When Lilith versions disagree, lean on what repeats across them.

The common mistake

Reading Lilith as a warning label. Lilith is the part that refuses to be made smaller. In Umbriel's chart it sits in the house of play, and it is one of the best things about the voice.

Run the six steps and read your step 6 sentence back. If it surprises you, look again at the tightest contact you found; that is usually the line doing the work. Then notice your Liliths' house and ask where in life you are least willing to be edited.
