▲ Free Midheaven Calculator — Your MC Sign and Degree

Umbriel's free Midheaven calculator finds your MC — sign and exact degree — from your birth date, time and place. No account, no email. The Midheaven moves about a degree every four minutes, so like the Ascendant it needs a real birth time rather than an estimate.

What the Midheaven actually is

The Midheaven, or MC, is the point where the ecliptic crosses the meridian — the highest point the zodiac reaches above your birthplace at that moment. It is not a planet and not a house cusp by definition; it is an angle, calculated directly from the time and the longitude. Directly opposite it sits the IC, the lowest point.

It is traditionally read as the public axis: vocation, reputation, what you are seen doing, the direction you are aimed. The IC opposite carries the private end — home, roots, where you come from and what you return to. Read as a pair they are more useful than either alone, since one is usually the cost of the other.

⚠️ One technical detail catches people out. In most house systems the Midheaven is the 10th house cusp, and it is easy to assume that is a rule. In Whole Sign it is not: the 10th house is simply the tenth sign from the rising sign, and the MC can fall in the 9th or the 11th instead. That is not an error — astrologers who work that way read where the MC lands as meaningful in itself. Umbriel gives the Midheaven as its own point so it is visible whichever system you use.

What's in your result

Don’t know your birth time?

Umbriel does not fill the gap with a guess. Tick “I don’t know the exact time” and it checks your whole birthday, hour by hour, then tells you two things: which placements are the same whatever time you were born — as exact as they would be if you knew the minute — and which are down to two signs, both named, so you know what a parent’s memory would settle.

The Ascendant, the Midheaven and the houses are left out rather than approximated. A birth time is the one thing they cannot be computed without, and an approximate Rising sign that looks exact is worse than no Rising sign at all.

Common questions

What does the Midheaven mean in astrology?

It is traditionally read for vocation, reputation and public direction — what you are seen doing and where you are pointed. Its opposite, the IC, carries home and roots, and the two are best read as a pair.

Can I find my Midheaven without a birth time?

No. The MC moves about a degree every four minutes and through a whole sign in roughly two hours, so an estimated time gives an unreliable answer. Umbriel leaves it blank rather than guessing.

Is the Midheaven always the 10th house cusp?

In most systems, yes — but not in Whole Sign, where the 10th house is the tenth sign from the Ascendant and the Midheaven can fall in the 9th or the 11th. Astrologers using Whole Sign read where the MC lands as meaningful in itself.

What is the difference between the Midheaven and the Sun sign for career?

The Sun sign describes a style; the Midheaven describes a direction and how it is seen from outside. The MC's ruler, and where that planet sits, usually says more about the practical shape of it than the MC sign alone.

Is the Midheaven calculator free?

Yes — MC, IC, the ruler and the aspects, with no account and no email.
