What the Midheaven is
The Midheaven, or MC, is the point where the ecliptic crosses the meridian: the highest point the zodiac reaches above your birthplace at that moment. It is not a planet and not a house cusp by definition; it is an angle, calculated directly from the time and the longitude. Directly opposite it sits the IC, the lowest point.
It is traditionally read as the public axis: vocation, reputation, what you are seen doing, the direction you are aimed. The IC opposite carries the private end, home, roots, where you come from and what you return to. Read as a pair they are more useful than either alone, since one is usually the cost of the other.
One technical detail catches people out. In most house systems the Midheaven is the 10th house cusp, and it is easy to assume that is a rule. In Whole Sign it is not. The 10th house is simply the tenth sign from the rising sign, and the MC can fall in the 9th or the 11th instead. That is not an error, astrologers who work that way read where the MC lands as meaningful in itself. Umbriel gives the Midheaven as its own point so it is visible whichever system you use.
How Umbriel computes it
This tool finds the ecliptic degree that is crossing the meridian, the highest point of the zodiac, at your birth moment and place. Your local birth time is converted to Universal Time, then to Greenwich sidereal time using the Sun's mean longitude, and your longitude is added to give the local sidereal angle (the RAMC). The Midheaven is then the ecliptic longitude whose right ascension equals that angle, found with the arctangent of sin(RAMC) over cos(RAMC) times the cosine of the obliquity of the ecliptic. That formula uses your longitude and the obliquity but not your latitude. The IC is 180 degrees opposite it. On a sidereal chart the ayanamsa is subtracted, so the sign can differ from the tropical one. It needs a real birth time: the sidereal angle turns 15 degrees an hour, so each 4 minutes of clock time moves it about a degree and a few minutes can change the degree, and without a time Umbriel shows no Midheaven at all. The house system does not move the Midheaven itself, but in a whole-sign chart the tenth house is counted from the rising sign, so the Midheaven can fall in another house. The accuracy page reports the Ascendant and Midheaven under 0.5 arcminutes against an independent implementation, which is a check against another program, not against JPL.

The Ascendant, the Midheaven and the houses are left out rather than approximated. A birth time is the one thing they cannot be computed without, and an approximate Rising sign that looks exact is worse than no Rising sign at all.

What does the Midheaven mean in astrology?

Can I find my Midheaven without a birth time?
