Secondary progressions work on a simple substitution: one day after birth stands for one year of life. Your chart at thirty is the sky as it stood thirty days after you were born. It is a symbolic technique, not an astronomical one, nothing is where the progressed chart says it is, and it is worth being clear about that, because it is often presented as though it were a transit.

Within that scheme the progressed Moon is the fast hand on the clock. The real Moon crosses a sign in two and a half days, so the progressed Moon crosses one in about two and a half years, and completes a circuit in roughly twenty-seven and a half, which is why the ages around 27-28, 55 and 82 come up so often. Its sign is usually read as the emotional colour of a multi-year stretch, and its house as the area of life quietly under emphasis.

The other half is the progressed lunation cycle: the progressed Moon's phase relative to the progressed Sun, running new to full to new across those twenty-seven years. Read that way it gives a long arc, a progressed new Moon as a beginning, a progressed full Moon roughly fourteen years later as a culmination. It is one of the few techniques that describes a period long enough to be recognised in hindsight.

Umbriel takes the number of years from your birth to today, using 365.2422 days to the year, and casts your chart for the moment that many days after birth, keeping the seconds because a year maps to about four minutes and rounding to the minute would shift the Moon by up to about 0.4 arcminutes. The Moon's position in that progressed chart, with its sign, is your progressed Moon. Its phase is the angle between the progressed Moon and the progressed Sun, giving a phase name and an illumination percentage. The house shown is the house of the progressed Moon among your natal cusps. The list of upcoming sign changes is found by advancing the date in steps of 61 days, recomputing the progressed Moon each time, then halving the gap between the last step still in the old sign and the first step in the new one until it is down to about an hour, so each change is given to the day. Positions come from the same engine as the natal chart, with the Moon within 0.27 arcminutes of NASA/JPL Horizons over 1600 to 2050. The sign and phase need your birth date and time, and the house needs your exact birth time because it comes from your natal cusps. Progression is a symbolic technique that treats a day after birth as a year of life, laid over a measured Moon.
