Cancer begins at the June solstice, the Sun's furthest point north, and the Tropic of Cancer on a map is named for exactly that: the line the overhead Sun reaches before it turns back.

The name is now out of date, and that is the part worth knowing. The solstice point has been sliding backwards through the stars ever since it was named, so the Sun standing over the Tropic of Cancer today stands against the constellation Taurus. The line kept the old name. The sky moved.
