♏ Scorpio

Scorpio is the depths of the zodiac: intense, penetrating and unafraid of the dark. It seeks the truth beneath, and is remade by what it faces.

Scorpio dates, to the minute

The Sun is in Scorpio from about 23 October to 21 November. The exact moment moves by up to a day from one year to the next, because a year is not a whole number of days. These are the moments the Sun crosses into Scorpio and out again, computed by the same engine that casts every chart on this site.

Times are Universal Time (UTC). Your own clock can put the change on the day before or the day after. Born on one of these days? The Sun sign then depends on the minute, and a chart cast with your birth time settles it.

What Scorpio is like

Scorpio does not spend time in the shallow end. Offered the interesting surface of a thing or its unlit basement, the sign is already halfway down the stairs.

It reads people accurately and early. That is not a mystical talent. It is sustained attention aimed at what somebody is not saying, kept up long past the point where most of us relax.

And it commits absolutely or not at all. Scorpio's loyalty is not warm exactly, it is structural: once you are in, you are inside the walls, and the sign will act on that at real cost to itself and not mention it.

Fixed water. It holds, and what it holds it holds at depth.

In the body, Scorpio is linked to the reproductive and eliminative organs.

What it costs

Knowing where the pressure point is and not pressing it is a decision, and it stays a decision. The sign is not cruel. It is accurate, which is a heavier thing to carry than most people realise.

And privacy hardens. What starts as a reasonable refusal to explain yourself can settle into a habit of withholding, until the person closest to you is working from a partial map and does not know it.

There is nothing here to be ashamed of. The depth is not a warning label. It is the reason people bring you the things they cannot say anywhere else.

Your Sun sign is one placement of ten

A Sun sign is one planet out of ten, and this one gives away less than most.

Your Moon answers to a different sign, and so do Mercury, Venus and Mars. A Scorpio Sun with a Gemini Moon needs to talk about it, at depth, and will not be the one who starts. What a chart describes is the shape of a difficulty, never its outcome.

Born with the Sun in Scorpio

Twelve of the most looked-up people among the famous charts on this site, each with the Sun in Scorpio at any hour of their birthday:

Each one is a full chart, with the Moon and every planet, so you can see how differently the same Sun sign sits in twelve lives.

Where Scorpio sits in your chart, whatever your sign

You have Scorpio somewhere, and it is worth finding even if nothing at all is standing in it.

Traditionally it is read as the locked drawer. Find yours, and notice where no half measure has ever been available to you.

Scorpio on the eastern horizon at the minute you were born makes a Scorpio rising sign, a different placement from a Scorpio Sun and one that needs your birth time: what a rising sign is.

Scorpio season, in the sky

The Sun is in the sign Scorpio from late October to late November. In front of the actual constellation it spends barely a week: Scorpius is the shortest crossing of the lot, and the Sun then travels through Ophiuchus, the serpent-bearer, for nearly three.

That is where the thirteenth sign story comes from, and it is not a discovery. The tropical zodiac has never been a map of the constellations: it divides the Sun's yearly path into twelve equal lengths measured from the equinox, and the constellations they were named after are unequal, and always were. Antares, the red heart of the Scorpion, now falls at 10 degrees of the sign Sagittarius.

Mars and Pluto, the sign's rulers

Scorpio has two rulers and both are true. Mars ran the sign for two thousand years before Pluto was found in 1930, and Mars is still the half that acts: the drive, the nerve, the willingness to go through a thing rather than around it.

Pluto is the slow half, and it is genuinely slow. About 248 years for one circuit, which means a decade or two in each sign and everybody born in those years sharing it. Read your Mars for what you do. Read your Pluto for what you are made to face.
