What it actually is

The East Point is the degree of the ecliptic rising on the prime vertical — the great circle running due east and west through the zenith. It is the same idea as the Ascendant with one thing taken out: your latitude.

That makes it a useful second reading of the same question. At the equator the East Point and the Ascendant are the same degree. The further from the equator you were born, the further they separate — so the gap between your Ascendant and your East Point is a measure of how far your birthplace sits from that idealised horizon, rather than a disagreement between two methods.

Astrologers who use it read it as a more impersonal face of the first house: the Ascendant is how you meet the world with all your particulars intact, and the East Point is closer to the role you fall into when those particulars are stripped away.

⚠️ Umbriel does not report MC square East Point, and the reason is worth knowing before you compare this against other software. The East Point is the right ascension of the Midheaven plus ninety degrees by construction, so that square is built into the arithmetic. Checked across thirty charts it fired on thirty of thirty. An aspect that appears on every chart ever cast is a property of the method, not a feature of a person, so printing it would be a confident statement about somebody that is true of everybody. The East Point's contact with the Ascendant does vary — sixteen of the same thirty — and that one is kept.

⚠️ There is no reference chart anywhere that settles this point, which is exactly the situation in which software ships something plausible and wrong. Umbriel's is verified against invariants instead: properties that must hold on every chart rather than one set of numbers matched on one chart. The East Point must equal the Ascendant at zero latitude, and it must not manufacture an aspect that is really an identity. Both checks were needed; the second is what found the square.

How Umbriel computes it

The East Point is the ecliptic degree rising on the prime vertical — the same construction as the Ascendant with the birth latitude removed, so it is computed from the right ascension of the Midheaven plus ninety degrees, projected onto the ecliptic through the obliquity of date. Because latitude drops out, the East Point and the Ascendant coincide at the equator and separate as you move toward the poles; the gap between them is a reading of how far the birthplace is from that idealised horizon rather than an error in either. ⚠️ There is no outside reference chart that settles this point, which made it a candidate for shipping something plausible and wrong, so it was verified against INVARIANTS instead — properties that must hold on every chart rather than values matched on one. Two of them, and both were needed. The first is that the East Point must equal the Ascendant when the latitude is zero, which pins the construction. The second caught a real fault: an aspect table generated MC square East Point on thirty charts out of thirty, which is not a finding but an identity — the East Point is RAMC plus ninety by definition, so the square is built into the arithmetic and says nothing whatever about a person. That aspect is suppressed for exactly that reason, while the East Point's contact with the Ascendant, which varied across sixteen of the same thirty charts, is kept. An aspect that fires on every chart ever cast is a property of the method, and reporting it as a feature of somebody's chart is the quietest kind of wrong.

Common questions

What is the East Point in astrology?

The degree of the ecliptic rising on the prime vertical — the Ascendant computed without the birth latitude. At the equator it equals the Ascendant; further north or south the two separate.

How is the East Point different from the Ascendant?

The Ascendant depends on your latitude and the East Point does not. The distance between them is a measure of how far your birthplace is from the equator.

Why does Umbriel not show MC square East Point?

Because it is an identity rather than an aspect. The East Point is the Midheaven's right ascension plus ninety degrees by definition, so the square is in the arithmetic — it fired on thirty charts out of thirty, which makes it a fact about the method and not about you.

Do I need an exact birth time?

Yes. The East Point is an angle, so it moves with the clock — roughly a degree every four minutes, like the Ascendant.

Is the East Point the same as the Equatorial Ascendant?

They are the same point under two names; different software labels it either way.
