What the Matrix of Destiny is
The Matrix (sometimes called the Destiny Matrix) is a modern numerological system that reduces the day, month and year of your birth to numbers between 1 and 22, then places them at the points of an eight-pointed star. Each number corresponds to one of the 22 Major Arcana (The Fool, The Magician, The Empress and so on) and each position on the diagram carries its own question.
The horizontal line is traditionally read as the relationship axis, the vertical as the personal one, and the diagonals as inherited or karmic patterning. Additional points are calculated from these: a purpose or 'sky' point at the centre, and lines associated with money and with generational inheritance.
It's a young system with a strong following, and like the tarot it draws on, its value is in the questions it raises rather than any claim to predict. Because it needs only a birth date, it's also the easiest of these tools to try for someone whose birth time was never recorded.
How Umbriel computes it
This tool applies fixed arithmetic to the day, month and year of your birth date, and reads the results as the 22 Major Arcana of the tarot arranged on an octagram. Each number is reduced like this: if it is above 22, replace it with the sum of its digits and repeat until it is 22 or less, and treat 0 as 22. The Self point is your day, reduced. The Gifts point is your month. The Roots point is the digit sum of your year, reduced. The Task point is Self plus Gifts plus Roots, reduced, and the Comfort Zone at the centre is Self plus Gifts plus Roots plus Task, reduced. The four bridge points are sums of neighbours, each reduced: Self plus Gifts, Gifts plus Roots, Roots plus Task, and Task plus Self. Each result from 1 to 22 is looked up in a table of the arcana names and short readings. Only the date is used: no time, place or sky enters the calculation, and nothing is measured, so no astronomical accuracy applies. The Matrix of Destiny is a symbolic system layered on a date, and other versions of it use additional points and lines that this tool does not calculate.

How it calculates
Only your day, month and year are used. Any number above 22 is replaced by its digit sum until it is 22 or less, and 0 counts as 22. Your day gives the Self point, your month the Gifts point and your year's digit sum the Roots point. The other points are sums of these, reduced the same way.
When the result is uncertain
Nothing here is measured: no time, place or sky goes in. The Matrix of Destiny is a symbolic system, and other versions use more points and lines than this tool calculates.
Common questions
Do I need my birth time for the Matrix of Destiny?
No. This is the one system here that needs only your date of birth. That makes it a good starting point if your birth time was never recorded.
Is the Matrix of Destiny the same as numerology?
It's a relative. Both reduce your birth date to single numbers, but the Matrix maps those numbers onto the 22 Major Arcana of the tarot and arranges them into an octagram, where classical numerology keeps them as numbers with their own meanings.
Is it free?

How seriously should I take it?
As seriously as you'd take a tarot reading: as a set of images worth thinking about, not as a statement of fact. The Matrix is a modern system with no ancient lineage, whatever else you may read about it.
