What Human Design is
Human Design is a synthesis system created in the late 1980s. It takes two moments. Your birth, and a point about three months before it (the 'design' calculation, taken at 88° of solar arc), and maps the planets at both moments onto 64 gates drawn from the I Ching. Where those gates connect, a channel lights up. Where channels meet, a centre becomes defined.
The resulting diagram sorts people into five types (Generator, Manifesting Generator, Projector, Manifestor and Reflector) each with a strategy (how you're best suited to engage with the world) and an authority (where your body tends to make reliable decisions from). Most people meet Human Design through their type, but the detail is where it gets interesting.
It's worth being straight about what this is: Human Design is a modern synthesis, not an ancient tradition, and it isn't science. What it is is an unusually rich vocabulary for noticing how you make decisions, where you have consistent energy, and where you're more open and changeable. Read it as a set of prompts, not a verdict.
How Umbriel computes it
Two charts are cast: the Personality chart at your birth moment, and the Design chart for the moment the Sun stood exactly 88° of arc earlier, which is roughly 88 to 91 days before you were born. In each, thirteen bodies are read: the Sun, Earth, Moon, the nodes, and the planets from Mercury to Pluto. The zodiac is divided into the 64 gates of the I Ching wheel, each 5.625° wide, and each gate into six lines of 0.9375°. The wheel is anchored so that Gate 41 begins at 2° Aquarius and Gate 25 at 0° Aries. Which gates are hung decides which centers are defined and which channels are complete, and type, strategy, authority and profile follow from that by fixed rules. The positions come from the same engine as the rest of the site, and your birth time is resolved through the IANA time-zone database, historical daylight saving included. What is uncertain is your birth time. The Moon crosses a line about every 1 hour 40 minutes and a gate about every 10 hours, so a birth time that is an hour out can change the Moon's line, and one several hours out can change a gate, and with it a channel, your type or your authority. Human Design is a symbolic system layered on real astronomy: the positions are checked, and the readings are prompts, not measurements.
What's in your result
- TypeGenerator, Manifesting Generator, Projector, Manifestor or Reflector: determined by which centres are defined and how they connect.
- StrategyThe way your type is traditionally said to work best: responding, initiating, waiting for the invitation, or waiting a lunar cycle.
- AuthorityWhere your decision-making is said to be most reliable: emotional, sacral, splenic, ego, self-projected, mental or lunar.
- ProfileTwo numbers (like 1/3 or 6/2) drawn from the lines of your Sun gates: a description of the role you tend to play.
- CentresNine energy centres. Defined ones are consistent; undefined ones are where you're more porous and take in the room around you.
- Channels & gatesThe wiring: 64 gates and 36 channels, each with its own theme from the I Ching.
- VariablesThe four arrows: Motivation, Perspective (view), Determination (digestion) and Environment, each with its colour, tone and direction, plus your Cognition, also called Sense, the tone under your Design Sun: Smell, Taste, Outer Vision, Inner Vision, Feeling or Touch. Umbriel calculates these too, and flags them as the experimental part they are.
- Incarnation crossNamed in full, like Right Angle Cross of the Sphinx or Left Angle Cross of Informing, with the four Sun and Earth gates it is built from in both columns. The angle comes from your profile and the name from your Personality Sun gate, and all 192 names are checked against two separate published lists.
- Definition, and the gates that would bridge itSingle, split, triple split or quadruple split. When it is split, the result names the exact bridging gates that would close it. Umbriel calls them one gate away, because that is what they are: a gate you could meet in a transit, or in somebody standing next to you.
- CircuitryWhich circuit each defined channel belongs to, individual, tribal or collective, read as who your energy is actually for.
- The design calculationThe second moment, roughly three months before birth, taken at 88° of solar arc. Both columns come from real planetary positions, not a lookup table.
- Today, across your chartThe current transits laid over your own bodygraph, so you can see which gates are lit right now.
The five types, and what to do with yours
Human Design sorts everyone into five types, and the sorting is not a personality quiz. It comes from which of the nine centres are defined in your chart and how they connect to the throat. So the type is a fact about your chart before it is a story about you, and Umbriel draws the chart first and names the type second.
Generators are the largest group, a little over a third of people. The sacral centre is defined and it does not connect to the throat by a motor. The strategy is to respond: wait for something to show up, then notice whether the body says yes. Generators who start things cold tend to burn out; Generators who respond tend to have energy for days.
Manifesting Generators are Generators whose sacral centre does connect to the throat through a motor. Same strategy, to respond, with one extra step: inform the people around you before you move, because you move fast and they will otherwise find out afterwards. Roughly a third of people again.
Projectors have no defined sacral centre, so they run on other people's energy rather than their own. About a fifth of people. The strategy is to wait for the invitation: for the big things, work, love, a home, the invitation has to come from outside, and when it does, a Projector is often the person in the room who sees exactly what everyone else is doing.
Manifestors have a motor connected to the throat and no defined sacral centre. Under a tenth of people. They are the ones who can start things from nothing, and the strategy is simply to inform: say what you are about to do, so that the people it lands on are not surprised. Manifestors who skip the informing meet resistance and never understand why.
Reflectors have no defined centres at all, about one person in a hundred. Every centre is open, so the chart changes with the sky, and the strategy is to wait a full lunar cycle before a large decision. A Reflector is the community's mirror: how a Reflector feels in a place says a great deal about the place.
Authority is the part most people skip and the part that does the work. It names which centre gets the final say when you decide: the sacral (a gut yes or no, in the moment), the emotional centre (a wave, so wait until it settles), the spleen (a quiet instinct that speaks once), the ego, the self, or, for Reflectors, the Moon. Umbriel prints yours next to your type, because a Generator with emotional authority decides very differently from a Generator with sacral authority, and treating them as the same is the commonest mistake in beginner readings.
The profile is two numbers, like 1/3 or 6/2, taken from the lines of the Sun in your two columns. The first number is how you go about your life; the second is how other people see you do it. A 1/3 investigates first and learns by trial; a 6/2 spends its first thirty years experimenting and then climbs onto the roof to watch. Umbriel names both lines and says what each one tends to look like from the outside.
What to do with all this, in order: read your type and its strategy, and try the strategy for a week before you believe or dismiss it. Then read your authority, because that is the instruction you can actually use tomorrow. Then the profile, then the defined centres, then the individual gates, which is where most people begin and most people get lost. Umbriel's bodygraph is laid out in that order for exactly that reason.
Common questions
Is this Human Design calculator free?
Yes. Your full bodygraph: type, strategy, authority, profile, all nine centres, every defined channel and gate, your Incarnation Cross by name, plus the four Variables and your Cognition, is free to draw.
Does it name my Incarnation Cross?
Yes, in full, for example Juxtaposition Cross of Stillness, alongside the four gates it is made of. There are 192 crosses: the angle comes from your profile and the name from the gate your Sun sat in at birth, and every name was checked against two separate published lists.
Is this an advanced chart, with digestion, environment and cognition (sense)?
Yes. Beyond type and authority it calculates the four Variables, Motivation, Perspective (view), Determination (digestion) and Environment, each with its arrow, and your Cognition, also called Sense, the tone under your Design Sun. They are the newest and least settled part of Human Design, so the chart labels them experimental.
Do I need an account or an email address?
No. There is no sign-up, no email capture, no free trial and nothing to install. Enter your birth details and the chart draws.
Where is my birth data sent?
Nowhere. The chart is calculated in your own browser, on your device, from ephemeris algorithms shipped with the page. Umbriel does not need a server to draw it and does not send your birth details to one.
Do I need my exact birth time?
For Human Design, yes. It matters more than in most systems. Your gates and centres can change within an hour or two, so a guessed time can produce a different type entirely. If your time is genuinely unknown, treat the result as a rough sketch rather than a reading.
What's the difference between Human Design and astrology?
Human Design uses real planetary positions as its raw input, so the astronomy underneath is the same. What differs is the interpretation: astrology reads planets through signs and houses, while Human Design maps them onto the 64 I Ching hexagrams and a body diagram.
Is Human Design scientifically proven?
No. It is a symbolic system assembled in 1987, and it has not been tested the way a scientific claim would be. Umbriel offers it the same way it offers astrology, as a structured way to reflect, not as fact about you.
