Inner authority
Type tells you how the system thinks your energy works. Authority is the more useful half: it names where, in your own body, the system says a decision actually gets made. It is the second question almost everybody asks, and it is decided by your chart rather than chosen.
- How it is decidedBy which centres are defined, checked in a fixed order
- Most commonEmotional, a little under half of people
- What it is notA preference, a personality trait, or something you pick
- What it answersNot what to decide. When, and from where.
What authority is
The claim is narrow and worth stating plainly: that for each chart there is one place the decision is reliable, and that the mind is not it. Human Design does not say your thinking is bad. It says thinking is the part of you that takes in the world and considers it, and that considering is not the same act as deciding. What it offers instead is a location and, for some kinds, a clock.
Where that comes from: authority is read off which centres are defined in your bodygraph, in a fixed order of precedence. The first one present wins, every time, for everybody. It is not a judgement about you; it is a lookup.
The seven, in the order they are checked
Read down the list and stop at the first one that describes your chart. That is your authority, and the ones below it do not apply to you no matter how much they sound like you.
- 1 · Emotional, the Solar Plexus definedThe system's one hard claim: there is no truth in the now. An emotional wave runs over hours or days, and the same decision looks different at its top and its bottom. The instruction is to wait out the wave rather than to feel better, and the thing to notice is whether the answer is steadier at the end of it than at either edge. Roughly half of people.
- 2 · Sacral, the Sacral defined and the Solar Plexus notA response in the moment, arriving in the gut before language does: a lift, a sound, a flatness. It answers real questions and goes quiet for hypothetical ones, which is why "would you ever" tends to feel like nothing at all.
- 3 · Splenic, the Spleen defined and neither of the aboveA single quiet instinct in the present tense, described as saying a thing exactly once and never repeating itself. The practice is about hearing it at all, because it does not raise its voice and the mind arrives a second later with reasons.
- 4 · Ego, the Heart centre connected to the Throat and none of the aboveThe deciding question is want, not should: does this serve me, and do I actually have the appetite for it. The system treats a promise made without that appetite as the thing that goes wrong, rather than treating wanting as selfish.
- 5 · Self-projected, the G centre connected to the Throat and none of the aboveThe answer arrives in your own voice. You find it by talking, out loud, to somebody who will not advise you, and by listening to what your voice does rather than to the argument you are making.
- 6 · Mental, no motor and none of the aboveSometimes called environmental. There is no inner authority to consult, so the system points outward instead: talk it through with several trusted people, not for their opinions but to hear your own thinking in the open, and take the place you are in seriously as part of the answer.
- 7 · Lunar, a Reflector, with nothing consistently definedA full lunar cycle, about twenty-eight days, for anything large. The claim is that a Reflector samples every part of the cycle before the picture settles, so the waiting is described as collecting information rather than as hesitating.
What people get wrong about it
- "Authority tells me what to do."It does not offer content. It offers a place and, for emotional authority, a clock. What you decide is still entirely yours.
- "My authority feels wrong, so I must have a different one."Authority is a lookup from your chart, not a self-description. When it feels wrong the usual cause is a birth time that is off, which can move which centres are defined.
- "Waiting out the wave means waiting to feel good."The instruction is to see the decision from both ends of the wave, not to decide at the top. A yes that only exists at the peak is exactly what the system is warning about.
- "Using my mind is a failure."The mind is described as the part that gathers and weighs. The claim is only about who signs off, not about who does the work.
How to test it, not believe it
Authority is unusually testable, because it makes a prediction about something you can notice within a week rather than about your life as a whole.
Something small to try: take one ordinary decision you would normally make immediately, something with no stakes, and run it through your own authority instead. If you are emotional, look at it twice, several hours apart, and write down the answer both times. If you are sacral, ask somebody to put the question to you out loud and notice what happens in your gut before you speak. If you are splenic, notice whether anything arrived in the first second, before the reasons.
What you are checking is not whether the decision was better. It is whether the signal the system describes is actually there. If nothing turns up after several honest attempts, that is a real result, and it is worth more than this page.
In practice
Five ordinary moments, and what each authority does with them.
- An offer with a deadline of tomorrow
- Emotional authority treats the deadline as information about the other party, not as a reason to skip the wave. If the wave cannot fit, the honest answer is usually no.
- Somebody asks you out
- Sacral answers a real question and nothing at all to a hypothetical one. Splenic will have answered already, quietly, in the first second.
- A job you are talked into
- Ego authority asks the blunt question: do I want this, or am I proving something. The system predicts exhaustion when the answer was the second one.
- Choosing where to live
- Mental authority takes the room seriously. Walk around the neighbourhood, then talk it through with two people who will not advise you.
- A decision you keep reopening
- Reopening is itself the signal for emotional and lunar authorities: the picture has not settled yet, and the reopening is the cycle doing its work rather than you being indecisive.
A question to sit with
Think of a decision you regret. Where in you was it actually made, and how long had you had the question?
Common questions
- How do I find my inner authority? It is read off your chart, not chosen. Umbriel's free Human Design chart names it directly from your birth date, time and place, and the order of precedence is fixed: emotional, then sacral, then splenic, then ego, then self-projected, then mental, then lunar.
- Which authority is the most common?Emotional, which belongs to a little under half of people. It is also the only one that comes with a clock rather than a signal in the moment.
- Can my authority be different from my type?Yes, and that is normal. Type and authority are decided by different questions about the same chart, so two Generators can have different authorities and will be told to decide in genuinely different ways.
- What if I do not feel anything when I try it?That is a real result rather than a failure. The system makes a specific claim about a signal being there, and a claim that does not survive honest testing is information about the claim.
Human Design is a modern synthesis, assembled in the late 1980s from astrology, the I Ching, the chakra system and the Kabbalistic Tree of Life. It is not an ancient tradition and it is not science. Umbriel offers it the way it offers astrology, as a structured way to look at yourself, never as a fact about who you are.
