The 36 channels

A channel is two gates joined, one at each end, and it is the piece of the bodygraph that actually does something: a completed channel defines the two centres it runs between, and the defined centres decide your type and your authority. There are thirty-six, and every one belongs to a circuit that says who its energy is for.

What a channel is

Every channel has a gate at each end sitting in a different centre. When both gates are active, in either the personality column or the design column or one of each, the channel is complete and both centres become defined. That is the entire mechanism: definition is not assigned, it is what happens when two particular gates are both lit.

This is also why a chart cannot be read from a list of gates. Two people can share several gates and have no channel in common, and the system puts nearly all of its weight on the channels.

The three circuit groups

All thirty-six, by circuit

Individual · Knowing · 8 channels

Mutation. Being different, and empowering other people by being it. It arrives as a knowing you cannot account for, and it comes in pulses, not on demand.

1-8 · Self-Expression and Contribution
Joins the G / Identity and the Throat. Being yourself out loud, in your own particular way. Putting your bit in, and wanting it to count for something.
2-14 · Direction of the Self and Power Skills
Joins the G / Identity and the Sacral. Knowing which way to face, without being told. Fuel, for work somebody cares about.
3-60 · Ordering and Acceptance
Joins the Sacral and the Root. Making something workable out of a mess. Slow at the start. Living inside the limits, and finding the new thing in them.
12-22 · Caution and Openness
Joins the Throat and the Solar Plexus. Waiting for the mood before speaking. Then saying it well. Grace in company. Charm that comes and goes with the mood.
23-43 · Assimilation and Insight
Joins the Throat and the Ajna. Turning a strange idea into one plain sentence. A new idea arriving sideways, impossible to explain yet.
24-61 · Rationalization and Inner Truth
Joins the Ajna and the Head. Going back over the same thought until it finally lands. Needing to know why. Pressure that arrives with no answer.
28-38 · The Game Player and The Fighter
Joins the Spleen and the Root. Risking it, to find out what is worth the risk. Pushing back. Picking a fight that is worth having.
39-55 · Provocation and Spirit
Joins the Root and the Solar Plexus. Poking, to find out what somebody is really made of. Moods that arrive whole. Fullness and emptiness, both.

Individual · Integration · 7 channels

The oldest circuitry in the body, and the only one that is purely about you: staying alive, and being here as yourself. That is not selfishness. It is the ground everything else stands on.

10-20 · Behaviour of the Self and The Now
Joins the G / Identity and the Throat. How a person carries themselves, and liking themselves enough to. This moment, said out loud, with no rehearsal.
10-34 · Behaviour of the Self and Power
Joins the G / Identity and the Sacral. How a person carries themselves, and liking themselves enough to. Raw power. At its best when busy with its own business.
10-57 · Behaviour of the Self and Intuitive Clarity
Joins the G / Identity and the Spleen. How a person carries themselves, and liking themselves enough to. Hearing what is wrong in a room, right now, before anyone says.
20-57 · The Now and Intuitive Clarity
Joins the Throat and the Spleen. This moment, said out loud, with no rehearsal. Hearing what is wrong in a room, right now, before anyone says.
20-34 · The Now and Power
Joins the Throat and the Sacral. This moment, said out loud, with no rehearsal. Raw power. At its best when busy with its own business.
25-51 · Spirit of the Self and Shock
Joins the G / Identity and the Heart / Will. Loving everything equally, which is harder than it sounds. The jolt that wakes you up. Competitive, and brave with it.
34-57 · Power and Intuitive Clarity
Joins the Sacral and the Spleen. Raw power. At its best when busy with its own business. Hearing what is wrong in a room, right now, before anyone says.

Tribal · Ego · 3 channels

The bargain. Work, support, loyalty and resources, held together by agreements that have to be kept, and a willpower that is real but comes and goes.

21-45 · The Hunter and The Gatherer
Joins the Heart / Will and the Throat. Control over your own patch, and your own money. Holding the group together, and whatever the group owns.
26-44 · The Egoist and Alertness
Joins the Heart / Will and the Spleen. Selling it. Making the very most of what is already there. Picking up the past on people. Instinct about who is who.
37-40 · Friendship and Aloneness
Joins the Solar Plexus and the Heart / Will. The family bargain. Warmth, and who owes what to whom. Hard work, then a shut door. Both halves are the point.

Tribal · Defense · 4 channels

Keeping your people alive. Touch, food, sex, and the alarm that goes off when the family is at risk.

6-59 · Friction and Sexuality
Joins the Solar Plexus and the Sacral. The rub between people. Where both intimacy and rows begin. Getting past somebody defences. Closeness, and making life.
19-49 · Wanting and Principles
Joins the Root and the Solar Plexus. Needing, and asking. Tuned to what others need too. The line that will not be crossed. Where things break, or hold.
27-50 · Caring and Values
Joins the Sacral and the Spleen. Feeding people. Looking after what cannot look after itself. Keeping the rules that keep people safe.
32-54 · Continuity and Ambition
Joins the Spleen and the Root. Knowing what will last and what will not. Climbing. Wanting to end up further along than where it started.

Collective · Logic · 7 channels

Sharing what can be tested. Logic works in patterns and repetition and it is trying to make things safe for everyone, but it has to be asked, and it is right to doubt until it is sure.

4-63 · Formulization and Doubt
Joins the Ajna and the Head. Having an answer ready, long before it can be proved. Suspicion of the pattern. The question that starts the checking.
5-15 · Fixed Rhythms and Extremes
Joins the Sacral and the G / Identity. Doing it at the same time every day, and needing to. A range that swings wide. Nothing here sits in the middle.
7-31 · The Role of the Self and Leading
Joins the G / Identity and the Throat. Leading from beside people, not out in front. Leading because people asked, rather than by taking it.
9-52 · Focus and Stillness
Joins the Sacral and the Root. Staying on the small thing long enough to make it work. Sitting still long enough to see.
16-48 · Skills and Depth
Joins the Throat and the Spleen. Enthusiasm first, skill later. Practice is what makes it real. A deep well of knowing, and never feeling ready to draw on it.
17-62 · Opinions and Detail
Joins the Ajna and the Throat. Having a view, and wanting to hear it said out loud. Names, facts and order. The small print that makes it usable.
18-58 · Correction and Vitality
Joins the Spleen and the Root. Spotting what is off, and itching to put it right. Delight in being alive, and in making things better.

Collective · Abstract · 7 channels

Sharing what has been lived. Abstract runs backwards from experience, turning what happened into something worth telling, and it cannot tell you why until afterwards.

11-56 · Ideas and Stimulation
Joins the Ajna and the Throat. Ideas arriving to be passed on, not necessarily to be used. Telling the story, and keeping people interested in it.
13-33 · The Listener and Privacy
Joins the G / Identity and the Throat. The one people tell things to. A keeper of other lives. Going quiet to make sense of it, then telling the story.
29-46 · Perseverance and Determination
Joins the Sacral and the G / Identity. Saying yes, and staying in it, whatever it turns out to be. Being in the right place at the right time, in a body.
30-41 · Feelings and Contraction
Joins the Solar Plexus and the Root. Desire that burns. Wanting an experience before having it. The first small spark of wanting something new.
35-36 · Change and Crisis
Joins the Throat and the Solar Plexus. Wanting the next experience, having already had plenty. Emotional deep ends, and coming out the other side.
42-53 · Growth and Beginnings
Joins the Sacral and the Root. Finishing what was started. Seeing a thing all the way through. Starting things. The pressure to begin the next one.
47-64 · Realization and Confusion
Joins the Ajna and the Head. Making sense of it afterwards. The penny finally dropping. Pictures from the past, not yet made sense of.

What people get wrong about channels

How to use this page

Draw your chart and read only the channels that are actually complete in it, which for most people is between two and eight. Then look at which circuit group they fall into, because the system claims that is who your energy is naturally aimed at, and that is something the people around you can tell you whether they recognise.

A question to sit with

Look at your completed channels and count the groups they fall into. Is your energy aimed at yourself, at the people nearest you, or at strangers?

Common questions

Human Design is a modern synthesis, assembled in the late 1980s from astrology, the I Ching, the chakra system and the Kabbalistic Tree of Life. It is not an ancient tradition and it is not science. Umbriel offers it the way it offers astrology, as a structured way to look at yourself, never as a fact about who you are.
