The twelve profiles

Your profile is the pair of numbers in your chart, written like 1/3 or 4/6. It is the part of Human Design that describes how you are said to meet the world and what you are said to be doing here, and unlike type it has a texture people usually recognise immediately.

Where the two numbers come from

Every Human Design chart is cast twice: once for the moment of birth, which the system calls Personality and treats as the conscious half, and once for a point about three months earlier, which it calls Design and treats as the unconscious half. The first number of your profile is the line of your Personality Sun and the second is the line of your Design Sun.

That is why the second number so often reads as the part other people notice first. The system's own framing is that you experience the first and broadcast the second, and it is the single claim in Human Design most people find uncomfortably recognisable.

The six lines

All twelve

The two numbers are always adjacent or in one of two fixed relationships, which is why there are twelve rather than thirty-six.

1/3 the Investigator Martyr
Studies it, then breaks it anyway to see what happens. Foundations built from genuine trial and error.
1/4 the Investigator Opportunist
Learns deeply, then passes it on through the people already around them.
2/4 the Hermit Opportunist
Wants to be left alone and keeps getting called. The friendliest of the profiles and the most protective of its own time.
2/5 the Hermit Heretic
Called out and expected to fix it, while privately wanting the door shut.
3/5 the Martyr Heretic
Learns the hard way and is then expected to have the answer. The system flags this pair as most prone to being blamed.
3/6 the Martyr Role Model
Trial and error for three decades, then a long look from the roof.
4/6 the Opportunist Role Model
Builds a life out of relationships while slowly becoming somebody people watch.
4/1 the Opportunist Investigator
A fixed pair the system calls a juxtaposition: little room to manoeuvre, and a fixed way of being that works when it is not fought.
5/1 the Heretic Investigator
Projected onto, and quietly well prepared underneath it. The most practical of the 5s.
5/2 the Heretic Hermit
Called on constantly for a gift they never advertised.
6/2 the Role Model Hermit
Watched, and wanting to be left alone about it.
6/3 the Role Model Martyr
A first act of genuine chaos and a second half spent making sense of it.

What people get wrong about it

How to test it, not believe it

The testable half is the second number, because it is a claim about other people rather than about you.

Something small to try: without saying what you are doing, ask two people who know you well what they think you are like when they first met you. Then read your second line again. The system predicts that the second number will be nearer their answer than your own, and the interesting outcome is the one where it is not.

A question to sit with

Which of the six lines did you recognise before you read which one was yours?

Common questions

Human Design is a modern synthesis, assembled in the late 1980s from astrology, the I Ching, the chakra system and the Kabbalistic Tree of Life. It is not an ancient tradition and it is not science. Umbriel offers it the way it offers astrology, as a structured way to look at yourself, never as a fact about who you are.
