The nine centres

The nine shapes in a bodygraph are the centres, and whether each is coloured in or left white is the structure everything else is built on. Your type, your authority and most of what the system says about you are all read off this one picture.

What defined and undefined actually mean

A centre is defined when a whole channel running into it was active at your birth. The system's claim about a defined centre is consistency: it works the same way on a Tuesday as on a Saturday, in company or alone, and it is described as something you put out rather than take in.

An undefined centre is the opposite claim, and it is the more interesting one. The system says an undefined centre takes in whatever is around it and amplifies it, so the experience there is variable by design. Its trouble is not weakness but over-identification: mistaking something you picked up in a room for something that is yours.

Worth being clear about: undefined is not a deficiency in this system. It is described as the place you are most impressionable and, eventually, most wise about, because you have sampled every version of it.

The nine, and the question each one chases

For each undefined centre the system names a specific question it says you will chase, and those questions are the most checkable thing in the whole model.

• Head · inspirationPressure to make sense of things. Undefined, the system says you will chase questions that are not actually yours to answer, and thinking about other people's puzzles at two in the morning is the given example.
• Ajna · certaintyHow you process. Undefined, the chased thing is looking certain, and holding an opinion more firmly than you actually hold it.
• Throat · expression and actionThe busiest centre, where everything wants to arrive. Undefined, the chase is attention: talking to be noticed, and the awkwardness of speaking at the wrong moment.
• G · identity and directionWho you are and where you are going. Undefined, you are said to look for both in whoever you are with, and to feel unrecognisable to yourself after a change of company.
• Heart · willpower and worthThe smallest and, the system says, the one most often broken by trying. Undefined, the chase is proving your worth, and promises made to prove something are the named failure.
• Sacral · life force and workDefined in Generators and Manifesting Generators only, and the centre that decides type. Undefined, the system says you do not have sustained work energy and predicts trouble for anybody who forces it.
• Solar Plexus · emotionDefined, it runs a wave and takes over authority entirely. Undefined, you are said to amplify the emotional weather of the room and to avoid confrontation to keep the room calm.
• Spleen · instinct, fear and healthPresent tense and quiet. Undefined, the chase is holding on: to people, jobs and habits that are past their moment, because letting go registers as unsafe.
• Root · pressure and driveAdrenalised pressure to be finished. Undefined, the system predicts the specific feeling of rushing to get free of the rush, and of inventing urgency where none exists.

What people get wrong about it

• "Undefined means broken."It is the opposite claim in this system: the undefined centres are where you are said to take in the most and, over time, to understand the most.
• "More defined centres is better."Definition is consistency, not quality. A chart with eight defined centres is described as fixed, which has its own costs.
• "My open centre explains everything I struggle with."The centre offers one specific question each. A model that explains every difficulty explains none of them, and the questions above are narrow on purpose.

How to test it, not believe it

The centres make an unusually specific prediction, and it is about place rather than about personality: that what happens in an undefined centre changes with who you are near.

Something small to try: pick one undefined centre and its question from the list above. For a week, notice only where you are and who you are with when that feeling turns up. Not why, and not what it means. Just the room. The system predicts a pattern in the company rather than in the clock, and that is a pattern you can actually see.

An undefined Sacral. This is the prediction the system is most willing to be judged on.

Common questions

• What does it mean if a centre is undefined in Human Design?That no complete channel runs into it, so the system says it takes in and amplifies whatever is around it rather than producing something consistent of its own. It is described as the most impressionable part of a chart, not as a weakness.
• What is the difference between undefined and open?Both are white in the bodygraph. Undefined means the centre has some active gates but no complete channel; open means it has no active gates at all, and the system describes open centres as the most changeable of the two.
• How many centres does a typical chart have defined?Most people have between three and six of the nine. Having very few or very many is what produces the rarer types: a Reflector has none consistently defined.
• Which centre decides my type?The Sacral, and whether a motor centre connects to the Throat. That single structural question is what separates the five types, which is why two people of the same type can otherwise have very little in common.

Human Design is a modern synthesis, assembled in the late 1980s from astrology, the I Ching, the chakra system and the Kabbalistic Tree of Life. It is not an ancient tradition and it is not science.
