The 64 gates

A bodygraph has sixty-four gates, one for each hexagram of the I Ching, and each one sits in a particular centre. A gate is active in your chart when a planet was in that slice of the zodiac at your birth or at the design moment about three months earlier. These are all sixty-four, grouped by the centre they belong to, with the same one-line description the app prints when you tap one.

What a gate actually is

The zodiac is cut into sixty-four equal slices and each slice is given a hexagram. Where the planets fell across those slices, at your birth and at the design moment, is the whole of the raw material: your type, your authority, your profile and your defined centres are all read off which gates were lit and which of them joined up.

A single gate is a theme rather than an instruction. It only becomes structural when the gate at the other end of its channel is also active, because that is what completes a channel and defines the two centres it runs between. That is why two people can share a gate and have almost nothing else in common.

What people get wrong about gates

• "I have gate 34, so I am powerful."A gate is a theme, not a trait, and an unpaired gate is described as something you carry rather than something you consistently express. The system puts almost all of its weight on completed channels.
• "More gates is better."The count is not the point. Which centres end up defined is, and a chart with many scattered gates and few channels is a specific, ordinary thing rather than a deficient one.
• "Gate meanings are fixed and universal."The names come from the I Ching, and the descriptions vary widely between teachers. The sentences here are Umbriel's own plain reading of the name, and they are the same ones the app prints.

How to use this page

Reading sixty-four descriptions in a row tells you very little. Draw your chart, find the handful of gates that are actually active in it, and read only those. The ones that sit inside a completed channel are the ones the system says you will recognise.

Human Design is a modern synthesis, assembled in the late 1980s from astrology, the I Ching, the chakra system and the Kabbalistic Tree of Life. It is not an ancient tradition and it is not science.
