Definition and bridging gates

Definition is the shape your defined centres make together. If they all touch, your definition is single. If they fall into separate pieces, it is split, triple split or quadruple split, and the gap between two pieces is where a bridging gate comes in. What definition is

A centre is defined when a complete channel runs into it. Two defined centres are in the same piece if a chain of complete channels connects them. Count the pieces and you have your definition: one piece is single, two is split, three is triple split, four is quadruple split, and none at all (no complete channel anywhere) is no definition, which is what a Reflector has.

It is a description of shape, and it says nothing about how much is in the chart or how strongly. A chart with two centres and one channel has a single definition, and a chart with eight defined centres can be split.

The five shapes

No definition

No channel is complete, so no centre is defined. This is the Reflector chart, and the one shape with nothing to bridge.

Single definition

Every defined centre is joined to every other through complete channels: one connected piece. The system reads it as energy that runs through you without a break.

Split definition

Two separate pieces with a gap between them. The system reads the gap as a quiet pull toward whatever completes it, in other people and in the sky.

Triple split definition

Three separate pieces, so more gaps, and more places a single gate could close one.

Quadruple split definition

Four separate pieces. A piece needs at least two centres, so this needs at least eight of the nine centres defined, and it is the least common of the four shapes that have channels.

What a bridging gate is

A bridge is a gate you do not have. It sits at one end of a channel whose other end is in a piece you already have, so when it is active the channel is complete and two of your pieces join. It comes in two kinds, and the difference matters:

• One gate awayYou hold one end of the channel and the missing gate is in another piece. A single gate closes it. These are the ones people mean by “my bridging gates”, and the ones a transit or another person can supply.
• Two gates awayYou hold neither end of a channel that would join two pieces, so it takes both gates. It is a real possibility but a much weaker one, so it comes second.

A gate is supplied in two ways. A planet in the sky can be in it: the Moon crosses one gate in roughly ten hours and the Sun in just under six days, so a bridge that is missing from your chart is briefly present in the sky. Or somebody standing next to you can carry it in their own chart. In both cases the system reads it as the gap closing for as long as the gate is there.

Which centres a channel can join

The 36 channels between them join 17 of the 36 possible pairs of centres. A gap between two pieces can be closed by one gate only if there is a channel between a centre in one piece and a centre in the other, so the list below is the whole answer to what could bridge what. A pair that is missing from the list has no direct channel, and those two centres can only be joined through a third.

What people get wrong about split definition

• "Split means incomplete."It is a shape and not a shortfall. The system describes a single definition as self-contained and a split as bridging, and neither is treated as the better one.
• "A bridging gate is where my soulmate is."A bridging gate is a piece of arithmetic: which gate would join two pieces. Anyone who carries it, or any day with the right planet in it, supplies it. It says nothing about who is right for you.
• "I need to find people who bridge me."The system says the pull exists, not that you must act on it. A transit does the same job for a few hours, and a chart with one piece has its own themes.

How to test it, not believe it

The claim that a bridge changes how a day feels is one you can check in a diary. Draw your chart, note a gate that would close your split, and look up when the Moon is in it. That is about ten hours, once a month. Write down how the day felt before you look at anything else, and do it across several months. If nothing changes on those days, that is a result too.
