The Reflector

Reflectors are about one person in a hundred — the rarest design by a wide margin. The system describes them as having no defined centres at all: nothing fixed, everything taken in from the surroundings and given back.

What a Reflector actually is

The description is of someone with no fixed internal weather — who takes on the room and gives it back, and is therefore markedly different in different company. Not changeable in the sense of unreliable; changeable in the sense of a barometer, which is only useful because it moves.

Where that comes from: the label is applied when none of the nine centres is defined.

That leads to the one piece of practical advice the system is most insistent about: a full lunar cycle, roughly twenty-eight days, before a large decision. The reasoning given is that a Reflector's experience of a thing changes as the Moon moves through the chart, so a single day's impression is a sample rather than an answer. Waiting is described as collecting the other samples.

It also makes environment unusually load-bearing. Where a Reflector is, and who they are with, is treated as a bigger variable than it is for the other types — which is a claim you can test simply by noticing whether you are markedly different in different rooms.

What people get wrong about it

• "Having nothing defined means having no self."The system's claim is about consistency, not identity — that what you take in varies, not that there is nobody there taking it in.
• "Reflectors are psychic."The description is of sensitivity to environment. That is a mundane and observable thing, and it is more useful held that way.
• "Twenty-eight days for every decision."For the large ones. Nobody is suggesting you take a month to pick lunch.

How to test it, rather than believe it

The system offers a pair of feelings as its signal: surprise when you are working the way it describes, and disappointment when you are not. That pair is the part you can actually check.

Something small to try: Pick one decision you are carrying. Write one line about how you feel about it today, and put a note in your calendar to write another in a week. Then read them side by side.

If neither feeling turns up, that is a real result and worth more than this page.
