What the Gene Keys are
Where Human Design gives you a mechanical read-out, the Gene Keys, developed by Richard Rudd, are designed to be contemplated. Each of the 64 keys carries three frequencies: a Shadow (the pattern under pressure), a Gift (the same energy, relaxed and open) and a Siddhi (its most transcendent expression). The suggestion is never 'you are your Shadow'. It's that the Shadow and the Gift are the same energy at different frequencies.
Your profile arranges eleven spheres into three sequences. The Activation Sequence (Life's Work, Evolution, Radiance, Purpose) comes from your Sun and Earth positions and is where most people start. The Venus Sequence (Attraction, IQ, EQ, SQ) traces emotional patterning and relationships. The Pearl Sequence (Vocation, Culture, Brand) points at work and contribution.
It's a slow system by design. The usual advice is to sit with a single key for weeks rather than read all eleven in an afternoon, which makes it an unusual fit for a phone, and a good fit for something you return to.
How Umbriel computes it
This tool reads eleven positions from two charts and turns each into a Gene Key with a line. The two charts are the Personality chart at your birth moment and the Design chart for the moment the Sun stood 88 degrees of arc earlier, which Umbriel finds by halving a window of 84 to 96 days before birth 44 times until the Sun is on that degree. For each sphere the body's longitude is placed on the 64-gate wheel, where each gate is 5.625 degrees and each line one sixth of that, with Gate 41 starting at 2 degrees of Aquarius. The spheres are: Life's Work (Personality Sun), Evolution (Personality Earth, the point opposite the Sun), Radiance (Design Sun), Purpose (Design Earth), Attraction (Design Moon), IQ (Personality Venus), EQ (Personality Mars), SQ (Design Venus), Core or Vocation (Design Mars), Culture (Design Jupiter) and Pearl (Personality Jupiter). Each of the 64 gates is paired in a fixed table with a Shadow, a Gift and a Siddhi. The planet positions come from the same engine as the rest of the site, and the Design date is derived from the Sun's position at your birth moment. The result depends on your birth time: the Moon moves fastest of the bodies used (13.18 degrees a day on average in the code), so the Design Moon is the first sphere to change with a wrong time, and a time that is far out can also move the Design date, and with it the Design planets. Your birth place matters for converting the local time to Universal Time, not for the sphere positions themselves. The Gene Keys are a symbolic system layered on real astronomy: the positions are calculated, the meanings are a fixed table of archetypes, and neither the gate wheel nor the sphere list is an astronomical quantity.

They share the same 64-hexagram base and the same birth calculations, so the numbers often match. Human Design is mechanical and prescriptive: type, strategy, authority. The Gene Keys are contemplative. The same gate is offered as a Shadow-Gift-Siddhi spectrum to sit with over time.
Where should I start with my profile?
Almost everyone starts with Life's Work. Your Sun sphere. Read its Shadow and Gift, then leave it for a week and notice whether either shows up in ordinary life. The system is built for that pace.
Do I need an exact birth time?
It helps a great deal. The line numbers (the decimal part of each key) shift quickly, and the design calculation is time-sensitive. An approximate time gives approximate spheres.
Do I need an account or an email address?
