Say what each angle is a crossing of, explain why they are not 90° apart, and use signs of long and short ascension to predict which Rising signs are common.

Two different crossings

The four angles of a chart are not four points of a compass. They are two pairs, and each pair is where the ecliptic crosses a different circle.

The Midheaven is where the ecliptic crosses your meridian — the great circle running from due north, up over the point directly above your head, to due south. It is the highest point the ecliptic reaches for you, and the IC is the opposite crossing, beneath your feet.

The Ascendant is where the ecliptic crosses your horizon in the east. The Descendant is the same crossing in the west.

And here is a difference that surprises people: the Midheaven does not need your latitude. It comes from local sidereal time and the obliquity, and nothing else. Two people at the same longitude at the same moment share a Midheaven whether one is in Oslo and the other in Naples. The Ascendant, by contrast, needs latitude, because the horizon tilts with it — which is why a chart cast for the same moment in those two cities has one angle in common and one wildly different.

Why they are not ninety degrees apart

Look at an ordinary chart wheel and the Ascendant is drawn on the left, the Midheaven at the top, and the eye reads them as a right angle. In the sky they are not.

The meridian and the horizon really are perpendicular. But the ecliptic is tilted with respect to both of them, and the amount of that tilt changes hour by hour as the sky turns. So the two crossings, measured in ecliptic longitude, are usually not 90° apart at all. At middling latitudes the gap typically runs anywhere from about 60° to 120°, and at high latitudes it can be far more extreme.

This single fact is the reason quadrant house systems exist and the reason they are hard. A chart's four angles divide the wheel into four quadrants that are genuinely unequal — one might hold 110° of zodiac and the next 70°. If you want the Ascendant to start the first house and the Midheaven to start the tenth, you have to decide how to share out an uneven quadrant between three houses, and there is no single obviously correct way to do it. Every quadrant system is one answer to that question.

It also explains something people notice and misread: a chart where the Midheaven looks “wrong”, sitting nearer the eleventh house cusp than the tenth in a whole-sign wheel. Nothing is broken. The MC is a real crossing that lands where it lands, and only some house systems force it to be a cusp.

Signs of long and short ascension

Because the ecliptic meets the horizon at an angle that changes through the day, the twelve signs do not take equal time to climb over it. Some heave themselves up slowly; others shoot past.

At around 50° north, the signs from Cancer through Sagittarius are signs of long ascension — Libra and Scorpio can take well over two and a half hours to rise. The signs from Capricorn through Gemini are signs of short ascension, and Pisces and Aries can be over the horizon in under an hour. In the southern hemisphere the two groups swap.

The consequence is measurable and slightly startling: Rising signs are not evenly distributed. A sign that takes two and a half hours to rise is on the horizon for two and a half hours of every day, and a sign that takes forty minutes is only there for forty. In the northern hemisphere there are simply more people with Libra rising than with Aries rising, and it is arithmetic rather than anything astrological.

The old astrologers measured these ascension times carefully, because the table you need to know how long a sign takes to rise is also the table you need for primary directions — the oldest predictive technique there is, which Module 15 takes up. The name for the underlying quantity is oblique ascension, and it is one of those places where a piece of pure spherical trigonometry turns out to be load-bearing for the rest of the subject.

What that looks like

Cast the same moment for two cities at the same longitude, one at 41° north and one at 60° north. The Midheaven is identical in both charts — same sign, same degree, to the arcsecond — because the meridian does not care about latitude. The Ascendant differs by tens of degrees, and in the more northerly chart the quadrants are noticeably more lopsided: one pair of quadrants swollen, the other squeezed. One instant, one meridian, two horizons.

What to take away

The common mistake

Reading the wheel as geometry rather than as a projection. The drawing puts the Ascendant at nine o'clock and the Midheaven at twelve, which looks like a right angle and almost never is one. Every oddity of quadrant house systems comes from that gap between the picture and the sky.

Try it on your own chart

In your own chart, count the degrees from your Ascendant to your Midheaven the short way round. If it is not close to 90, you have just confirmed this lesson on your own data. Then work out how many degrees your fourth, fifth and sixth houses span in the system you are using, and compare them with the seventh, eighth and ninth. The difference between those two sets is the unequal quadrant your house system had to share out.

The horizon and meridian are perpendicular, but the ecliptic cuts across both at an angle that changes hour by hour. The resulting unequal quadrants are the whole difficulty of quadrant houses.

At northern mid-latitudes, which is a sign of LONG ascension — slow to climb over the horizon?

Cancer through Sagittarius are long-ascension signs in the north. A sign that takes two and a half hours to rise is on the horizon far more of the day than one that takes forty minutes — which is why Rising signs are not evenly spread.

The MC depends on sidereal time and obliquity, neither of which changes with latitude. Everything horizon-based differs, and the more northerly chart has the more lopsided quadrants.
