Why house systems disagree, and where they break
Predict how much two house systems will differ for a given chart, name the latitudes where some systems fail outright, and choose one for a reason you can state.
The disagreement is geometric, not doctrinal
House systems do not differ because astrologers had different opinions about the meaning of the sixth house. They differ because of the unequal quadrant from the last lesson, and the size of the difference is predictable.
Two things drive it. Latitude is the big one: near the equator the ecliptic stands up steeply against the horizon, quadrants come out close to equal, and every system gives nearly the same answer. Go north or south and the quadrants stretch, and the systems fan apart. At 55° north, intermediate cusps between Placidus and Regiomontanus can differ by twenty degrees or more.
The moment matters too, because the ecliptic's angle to the horizon changes through the day. The same latitude produces near-agreement at some hours and wide disagreement at others.
So “which house system should I use” has a quietly reassuring first answer: for a great many charts, particularly ones from lower latitudes, it hardly matters, because the systems agree to within a couple of degrees. The question only becomes sharp for high-latitude births and for planets sitting near a cusp — and those are exactly the cases where it becomes very sharp indeed.
Where systems break outright
Beyond the Arctic and Antarctic circles — past about 66°34′, which is the obliquity subtracted from a right angle — the geometry stops cooperating.
At those latitudes, parts of the ecliptic can fail to rise or set at all on a given day. A system that depends on a degree travelling from the horizon to the meridian has nothing to divide, because for some degrees that journey does not happen. Placidus and Koch can return nonsense or nothing for births in northern Norway, Iceland, northern Alaska or Antarctica. It is not a rounding problem that better software fixes; the quantity being divided genuinely does not exist.
Whole sign, equal, Porphyry, Regiomontanus and Campanus all continue to work at any latitude, because what they divide always exists. Campanus and Regiomontanus become strange up there — houses of very unequal size — but they produce an answer.
So there is a whole class of births where the choice is not aesthetic. If you read for people born far north, you need a system that does not fall over, and you need to know that is why you chose it. The Arctic circle is a real place where a fair number of people are born, and “my software gave an error” is not a reading.
Choosing one, for a reason you can say out loud
Here is a defensible procedure, and the point is less which answer you reach than that you can state the reason.
Know what your technique assumes. This is the one most people skip. Traditional methods came out of a whole-sign world: annual profections count signs, the triplicity and sect material in this course was written for whole-sign houses, and derived or turned charts count from one house to another. A technique inherits the framework it was designed for, and porting it to a different one is a decision rather than a neutral translation. Use profections in Placidus if you like — but knowingly.
Test on charts you actually know. Your own, and a handful of people whose lives you know well enough to be surprised by. Not to prove a system right, which cannot be done from five charts, but to find out which one you can read.
Prefer what survives. The rule from the last lesson, promoted to a habit: build a reading out of placements that hold across at least two systems, and flag the rest as open.
Say which one you used. A chart shared without its house system is an incomplete statement, in the same way a measurement without units is. It costs four words.
What that looks like
A birth in Tromsø, at 69° north. Ask for Placidus houses and the software either refuses, silently substitutes another system, or returns cusps in an impossible order — and which of those three it does is a property of the program rather than of the sky. Ask for whole sign and you get a perfectly ordinary chart, because the sign containing the Ascendant is the first house at any latitude on Earth. For this person the choice was made by geometry, not preference, and an astrologer who does not know that will think their chart is broken.

The common mistake
Assuming a high-latitude chart is broken when a quadrant system chokes on it. The software is reporting a real geometric fact, not a bug — and the fix is a system that divides something which exists, not a better program.
Try it on your own chart
Cast your own chart at your real latitude, then cast the same moment at 65° north and again at 5° north, and compare how far the intermediate cusps move each time. You will see the fan open as you go north. If you or anyone you read for was born above about 60°, cast that chart in Placidus and in whole sign and look at how much is riding on the answer.
