Ninety degrees apart, in signs that share a mode and nothing else. They keep setting each other off, so the subject between them stays in motion. This is the angle that will not let a topic go quiet.

What the square means
An aspect is the angle between two planets: how they talk to each other. At 90°, the square is the aspect of the same subject restarting, and what each restart gets you to do. In a chart it's associated with motion, recurrence, pressure, unfinished business.
We call this one Activation, after what the angle does rather than how it is supposed to feel. Elsewhere you will see the square called a “challenging” or “hard” aspect. Same geometry. Both words are worth having, and we would rather hand you the mechanism first and let you decide how it feels.
Why squares work like that
Ninety degrees is three signs apart: same mode, different element, opposite polarity. Two planets that want to move at the same speed and in the same season, on entirely different terms.
That is the mechanism, and it is why a square repeats rather than resolves. Both are cardinal, or both fixed, or both mutable, so they keep arriving at once and neither will wait.
How close does it have to be?
About 8 degrees, the same allowance the conjunction and the opposition get, because the hard aspects are felt further out.
A wide square is a recurring theme. A square inside a degree is usually one of the two or three things a person would name if you asked what their life had been about.
Is it a good aspect or a bad one?
Called challenging, and that is the label we most want to argue with. A square is the aspect of a subject that keeps restarting, and people build whole competences on theirs.
What is true is that it costs something. What is not true is that it is a defect. Nothing in a chart is evidence about how a life turned out.
How common is it?
Two places on the circle, so among the commonest aspects, along with the trine and the sextile.
A chart with no squares at all is unusual, and not obviously fortunate. The square is where a great deal of the movement in a chart comes from.
A question to sit with
What keeps coming back around, and what does it move you to do each time?
Working with it
Next time the subject comes back around, notice that it has come back rather than treating it as new, and write down what you did last time. A square repeats; what you do with the repetition is the part that is yours.
