What the trine means

An aspect is the angle between two planets: how they talk to each other. At 120°, the trine is the aspect of a pairing that needs nothing from you, which is also why it stops being visible. In a chart it's associated with no resistance, runs unattended, fluency, the default setting.

We call this one Flow, after what the angle does rather than how it is supposed to feel. Elsewhere you will see the trine called a “harmonious” or “easy” aspect. Same geometry. Both words are worth having, and we would rather hand you the mechanism first and let you decide how it feels.

Why trines work like that

A hundred and twenty degrees is four signs apart, which puts both planets in the same element and the same polarity, in different modes. Fire with fire, earth with earth.

Same element means they want the same kind of thing. Different modes means they are not in each other's way about when. There is nothing to negotiate, and that is the entire character of it.

How close does it have to be?

About 8 degrees. Generous, and it can afford to be, because a trine is the aspect people are least likely to notice: it never creates the problem that would make them look.

A wide trine is a background condition. A tight one is a talent so native that whoever has it usually assumes everybody does.

Is it a good aspect or a bad one?

Called easy, and here that is nearly right, which is its own trap. A trine does run by itself. That is the difficulty.

Something that has never asked for effort is something you have never had to examine, and it is very often the last part of a chart a person can describe about themselves. The gift is real. So is the blind spot, and they are the same feature.

How common is it?

Two places on the circle, so as likely as a square or a sextile, and most charts have several.

Worth knowing whenever a trine is presented as a piece of good fortune. Nearly everybody has some, and they are not the reason anything went well.
