What the 7th house is, before anybody lands in it
The 7th house begins at the Descendant, the exact opposite point to the Ascendant. It is the part of the sky that was going down when you were born, and it has always been read as the other person.
So an overlay here is direct. Somebody has put a planet in the room where you keep your idea of a partner, and the usual report is that they simply felt like one, quickly and without much argument.
It is also the house of open opposition, which the older writers put in the same room as marriage on purpose. The person you face is the person you face.

- NeptuneThe partner becomes slightly imagined. Neptune on this angle is traditionally associated with a great deal of tenderness and with seeing what you hoped for, and the two are difficult to separate from the inside.
- PlutoPartnership as transformation. Intense, binding, and traditionally associated with power between two people, which is a subject better discussed than diagnosed.
It runs both ways, and the two are different readings
Their planets in your 7th is somebody arriving in your idea of a partner. Your planets in their 7th is you arriving in theirs. Where only one direction is loaded, one person is being seen as a partner and the other is seeing a person, which is a very common and very painful asymmetry.

What makes an overlay here worth reading
The 7th cusp is the Descendant, an angle, so closeness to the cusp matters more here than almost anywhere else. A planet within a degree or two of it is a headline.

What it does not tell you
A 7th house overlay is not a forecast of marriage. It describes recognition, which is a real and specific thing, and recognition has never been a guarantee of anything that follows it.
This house needs a real birth time. The Descendant moves a degree every four minutes, and an hour of doubt can hand the overlay to the 6th or the 8th, which are entirely different readings.
