1st house synastry
MODERNA modern technique: twentieth-century astrology.
When someone's planets land in your 1st house, they land on the way you come across: your face, your walk, the half second before you have said anything.

What the 1st house is, before anybody lands in it
The 1st house is the doorway rather than the room. It is the body you turn up in and the impression a stranger forms of you before you open your mouth. It is the one house you cannot watch from outside, because you are standing in it.
So an overlay here is unusually physical. Their planet is sitting on the part of you that arrives first. That is why this is one of the few overlays people notice without knowing any astrology. They just say they feel different around that person, or that they walk into a room differently.
It is also the overlay most often confused with love. Being made visible is a strong feeling, and it can arrive with somebody you would not otherwise have looked at twice.
Their planets in your 1st house
- SunTheir Sun here lights up how you come across. Many people report feeling more like themselves in this company, and some report feeling more on show. Both are the same mechanism.
- MoonTheir Moon reads your face before you speak. This is the overlay that feels like being known on the first afternoon, which is lovely, and which is also being watched very closely.
- MercuryThey describe you. You become the subject of the conversation, often kindly, and you learn what you look like from outside. Whether that is a gift depends entirely on how it is said.
- VenusVenus here likes your face, your voice and the way you move. It is the plainest attraction overlay there is, and it tends to be mutual even when the aspects elsewhere are quiet.
- MarsThey wake you up. You move faster, start things, and sometimes bristle. The same contact that makes you brave at the right moment makes you short at the wrong one, so pace is the whole art of it.
- JupiterYou take up more room around them. Jupiter on the 1st is traditionally read as encouragement, and the thing to watch is that a bigger version of you is not automatically a truer one.
- SaturnThey make you careful about how you appear. That can feel like being tidied and it can feel like being steadied, and it is often both in the same week. It is the overlay most likely to be read as rejection when it is actually caution.
- UranusYou behave unlike yourself. People with this contact describe hardly recognising their own decisions, which is exciting at the start and hard to build on without something steadier underneath.
- NeptuneYour edges go soft. You may find yourself becoming a little whatever they are looking for, without meaning to and without noticing until later.
- PlutoThey see past the doorway on day one. Being seen that thoroughly is compelling, and it is heavy, and the two arrive together rather than one at a time.
It runs both ways, and the two are different readings
Both directions are worth reading and they are not the same reading. Their planets in your 1st house describe what happens to you in company. Your planets in their 1st describe what you do to how they arrive in a room, which they will feel and you will mostly not.
When it runs both ways at once, two people are each changing how the other shows up. That is the version people call chemistry, and it is also the version where neither of you is much of a witness to what is happening.
What makes an overlay here worth reading
An overlay here counts for more the closer the planet sits to the Ascendant itself. A planet three degrees off the rising degree is doing something a planet at the far end of the house is not.
Umbriel names a house in the pair reading when three or more of the other person's personal planets land in it. One planet in your 1st is a note. Three is a description of the relationship.
What it does not tell you
This house needs a real birth time from the person whose house it is. The rising degree moves about one degree every four minutes, so an hour of doubt can move the whole set of cusps and change which planet is in which room.
And a strong 1st house overlay says nothing about whether a relationship is good for you. It says the other person is standing very close to the door. What they do there is not in the chart.
A question to sit with

Common questions
What does it mean when their planets are in my 1st house?
Their planets are sitting on the way you present yourself. The common report is feeling visible, changed or woken up in that company, depending on which planet it is. It is one of the most physically noticeable overlays.
Is 1st house synastry good for attraction?
Venus and Mars here are traditionally read as strong physical attraction, and Sun and Moon as recognition. Attraction is not the same as durability, and the 1st house has nothing to say about the second question.
Do we both need birth times for this?
You need a birth time for the person whose houses are being read. The Ascendant moves a degree every four minutes, so without a time the house cusps are unknown and the overlay cannot be computed honestly.
