The 1st house is the house of self. Your body, your instincts, and the first impression you give. It's the doorway everyone comes through to meet you.

What the 1st house is about
The 1st house is the only one you cannot watch from outside, because you are standing in it. It is the body you turn up in, the speed you move at, and the half second of impression somebody forms before you have said anything.
It is not your personality, and the difference matters. The 1st is the approach: the doorway rather than the house. People who know you well tend to describe your Sun. People who have just met you have described your 1st.
Whatever sits here is the first thing about you that arrives in a room, whether or not you meant to send it ahead.
An empty 1st house is not an empty life
Most 1st houses have no planet in them, and that is not a gap. Every house has a sign on it and that sign has a ruler somewhere, and the ruler is where the reading goes when the room itself is unoccupied.
So find the sign on your 1st cusp, find that sign's ruler, and look at where the ruler is. A 1st house ruled by a Venus in the 10th says something quite precise about how you arrive: presentably, and with an eye on the room.
The sign on the cusp does the colouring
The sign on the cusp of your 1st house is your rising sign, and it is the most time-sensitive thing in the whole chart. It moves through all twelve signs in a day, about one every two hours.
Which is why an unverified birth time makes this house provisional. Four minutes out will rarely change it. An hour out very often will.
Where the 1st house actually is in the sky
The 1st house begins at the eastern horizon: the exact place the sky was coming up at the moment you were born. It is not a slice of the zodiac, it is a slice of the local sky, and it depends on where on Earth you were as much as when.
A planet in the 1st was sitting just under that horizon, minutes or an hour from coming up. The one that had already risen was in your 12th, which is the part of this most people have backwards. Had you been born an hour later, a different stretch of sky would have been standing there, and that is the whole reason the birth time matters.
The house systems disagree, and here is how much
Every house system except one begins the 1st at the same degree, the Ascendant. Placidus, Koch, Regiomontanus, Porphyry, Campanus and Equal do not argue about this cusp at all.
Whole sign is the exception, deliberately: it takes the entire sign your Ascendant falls in and calls all of it the 1st house. If your Ascendant is at 28 degrees of Leo, Placidus gives you a 1st house that starts there and runs on into Virgo, while whole sign gives you the whole of Leo and nothing else.
A question to sit with
When you walk into a room, what do you want people to feel, and how much of that is really you?
