What the 6th house is about

The 6th house is the part of a life that does not photograph well: the work rather than the career, the routine rather than the plan, the body maintained rather than admired.

It is where things are actually done. Whatever else a chart promises, the 6th is the house that asks what you do on a Tuesday, and a great deal of what people call luck turns out to have been kept up here for years.

Health lives here for the same reason. Not illness as fate: the daily upkeep, and how well or badly you attend to it.

An empty 6th house is not an empty life

An empty 6th does not mean you have no routine, and it does not mean you will be well. Very few charts have anything here at all.

The cusp and its ruler carry it, and this is one house where the ruler's condition is more informative than any tenant. A 6th ruled by a Mars in the 12th works hardest where nobody is watching.

The sign on your 6th cusp describes how you go about the daily: whether you keep a list, whether the routine has to be interesting to survive, what you are like when the work is dull and still needs doing.

It is also a fair guide to what you are like as a colleague, which is a more useful thing to know about yourself than most people expect.

Where the 6th house actually is in the sky

The 6th house is the stretch just below the western horizon: the part of the sky that had set very recently, within about the last two hours before you were born.

So a planet here had just gone down in the west, which is the mirror of the 12th, where a planet had just come up in the east. The wheel is a picture of one turning sky, and the two houses either side of each horizon are the two edges of that turn.

The house systems disagree, and here is how much

The 6th is one of the widest disagreements between systems, because it sits just before an angle and Placidus compresses or stretches hardest there.

If you have a planet in the last few degrees of the 6th under one system, check it under whole sign as well. Moving into the 7th changes it from a description of your work into a description of your closest relationship, which is not a small difference.
