What the 3rd house is about
The 3rd house is the near distance: the people you did not choose but grew up beside, the roads you take without thinking about them, and the running commentary inside your own head.
It is the least glamorous house in the chart and one of the most consequential, because it is where the habits of thought live. How you explain a thing. What you notice first. Whether the voice narrating your day is on your side.
Siblings sit here, and so do neighbours, short journeys, and the ordinary daily traffic of messages, which is the modern form of the same thing.
An empty 3rd house is not an empty life
An empty 3rd is extremely common and says nothing whatever about how clever or articulate you are. Read the sign on the cusp and its ruler instead.
Mercury is worth reading here whatever the house contains, because Mercury is the natural tenant and describes the thinking itself rather than the surroundings it happens in.
The sign on the cusp does the colouring
The sign on your 3rd cusp colours how you communicate before you have decided to: the register you fall into, the speed, whether you write more clearly than you speak.
It also describes what your early surroundings sounded like, which is very often the reason for the default.
Where the 3rd house actually is in the sky
The 3rd house is lower still in the eastern sky, the part that would have risen in the third and fourth hours after you were born.
Worth saying plainly, because it is the thing most often misunderstood about houses: they are not stars and they are not signs. They are a division of the sky as seen from one place at one moment, which is why two people born in the same minute in different cities have identical planets and different houses.
The house systems disagree, and here is how much
An argued cusp. In Placidus the 3rd can be very wide or very narrow depending on your latitude, because the system divides time rather than space, and time is not spread evenly across the sky.
Above roughly 66 degrees north or south, Placidus stops being able to produce houses at all. Equal and whole sign work everywhere, which is one of the honest arguments in their favour.
