What the 4th house is about
The 4th house is underneath everything. Where you come from, what home meant before you had any say in it, and what you are still building a version of now.
It is the most private house in the chart and often the least visible to the person who has it, because a great deal of what happens here was settled before you could remember it being settled.
It also holds the end of things: the last part of life, the family line, what is left when the public part is over. The old writers called it the foundation, and that is the better word.
An empty 4th house is not an empty life
An empty 4th is not a rootless life. The sign on the cusp and its ruler carry the reading, and for this house the Moon is worth reading alongside them whatever is standing here.
A 4th ruled by a Moon in the 9th says home was somewhere else, or is.
The sign on the cusp does the colouring
The sign on the 4th cusp is the IC, one of the four angles of the chart, and it describes the private ground: what safety is made of for you, and what you are reproducing or refusing to reproduce from where you started.
Like the Ascendant it moves with the clock, so an approximate birth time makes it approximate.
Where the 4th house actually is in the sky
The 4th house begins at the lowest point of the sky. Not the horizon: the place directly beneath your feet, where the Sun stands at local midnight.
That is a real direction rather than a symbol. A planet on your 4th cusp was on the far side of the Earth from you at the moment you were born, and you can check that against any planetarium.
The house systems disagree, and here is how much
Every quadrant system agrees about this cusp, because it is an angle rather than a division. Placidus, Koch, Regiomontanus, Campanus and Porphyry all begin the 4th at the same degree.
Equal houses does not. It puts the 4th exactly 90 degrees from the Ascendant, which lands near the IC and rarely on it. If a reading of yours has quietly moved the bottom of the chart, that is why.
