The 12th house is the private, behind-the-scenes self: solitude, the unconscious, endings, and the spiritual. It's what's hidden, dissolving, or bigger than the ego.

What the 12th house is about
The 12th house is the part of a life that happens offstage. Solitude, rest, the things you do not say, and whatever is going on in you that has not yet been put into words.
It has an unfair reputation. The old lists put self-undoing and hidden enemies here, and both are real, but so is everything restorative: sleep, retreat, contemplation, the hours nobody is watching and you are not performing.
It is the house immediately before the 1st, which is the useful way to hold it. Whatever is here was in you before you arrived, and it tends to be the part other people sense and you find hardest to see.
An empty 12th house is not an empty life
An empty 12th is not a life without an inner one. Read the cusp and its ruler, as ever.
This house is worth extra care with an approximate birth time. A planet a degree or two either side of your Ascendant sits in the 1st or the 12th depending on a few minutes, and the two readings are close to opposite: the thing everybody sees first, or the thing nobody sees at all.
The sign on the cusp does the colouring
The sign on your 12th cusp describes what your solitude is like and what you do with it: whether the quiet restores you, whether you avoid it, what surfaces when nothing is asked of you.
It is also, in the old reading, the sign of what you carry that is not entirely yours. Family weather, inherited assumptions, the things learned before language.
Where the 12th house actually is in the sky
The 12th house is just above the eastern horizon: the stretch of sky that had risen most recently before you were born, within roughly the last two hours.
So a planet in your 12th had come up in the east shortly before you did. It is the exact counterpart of the 1st, which had not yet risen, and the two of them straddle the horizon you were born under. That is why they are so easily confused by a wrong birth time and so different in meaning.
The house systems disagree, and here is how much
The last argued cusp, and one that matters more than most, because it borders an angle. Placidus can make the 12th very wide at high latitudes, swallowing degrees that Equal or whole sign would put in the 11th.
And there is a genuine tradition split underneath it. Whole sign puts the entire sign before your rising sign in the 12th, so a planet in the same sign as your Ascendant is in your 1st house no matter how far from the horizon it stands. Neither approach is a rounding error; they are different answers to what a house is.
