What the 5th house is about
The 5th house is the one that does not have to justify itself. What you make, who you flirt with, what you play at, and the things you do for no reason except that they are yours.
It is the house of what comes out of you. Children in the old reading and creative work in the same breath, because both are the self extended into something that then has a life of its own.
Romance sits here rather than in the 7th, and the difference is exact. The 5th is the falling. The 7th is the arrangement you come to afterwards.
An empty 5th house is not an empty life
An empty 5th does not mean a joyless life, and it does not mean a childless one. It is among the most misread absences in the chart.
Read the cusp and its ruler. A 5th ruled by a Mercury in the 3rd makes things out of words, and would have done whether or not a planet ever stood in the 5th.
The sign on the cusp does the colouring
The sign on your 5th cusp is the flavour of your play: what you find fun, what you make, and what you are like at the start of something romantic, before anything has been decided.
It is often noticeably different from the sign on the 7th, which is why people can be one thing while falling for someone and quite another once they are settled with them.
Where the 5th house actually is in the sky
The 5th house is below the horizon on the western side: the stretch of sky that had already gone down a few hours before you were born.
The houses below the horizon are the six the Sun is in at night, which is worth knowing for a plain reason. If you were born after dark, your Sun is in one of houses 1 to 6, and if you were born in daylight it is in 7 to 12. It is the quickest sanity check there is on a birth time.
The house systems disagree, and here is how much
Another argued cusp, and this one moves a lot. In Placidus the houses either side of the IC are often very unequal, so a planet at the end of the 4th in one system can sit in the 5th in another.
If two readings disagree about whether something of yours is in the house of home or the house of play, they are not disagreeing about the sky. They are using different rules for dividing it.
