The 8th house is the deep end: intimacy, shared resources, power, and transformation. It's where you merge with another and where you're remade by what you go through.

What the 8th house is about
The 8th house is what you cannot do on your own terms. Other people's money, other people's bodies, the things that are held jointly and therefore cannot be decided alone.
It follows the 7th for a reason that is almost administrative: once there is a partner there is a shared account, an inheritance, a debt, a mortgage, a will. The mystical reputation grew on top of a very practical house.
And it is the house of what changes you rather than what you change. Grief, crisis, obsession, the endings you did not schedule. The old name for it was the house of death, which is accurate about the mechanism and needlessly heavy about the meaning.
An empty 8th house is not an empty life
An empty 8th does not promise a life without loss, and a full one does not sentence you to catastrophe. This is the house where that misreading does the most damage.
Read the cusp and its ruler like any other. What the 8th describes is how you handle what is shared and what is out of your hands, not how much of it is coming.
The sign on the cusp does the colouring
The sign on your 8th cusp describes how you do intimacy in the practical sense: how easily you let somebody into the accounts, the decisions and the parts of yourself you do not show at work.
It is worth reading against the 2nd, which is directly opposite and is what is purely yours. The two together are the whole question of what you keep and what you pool.
Where the 8th house actually is in the sky
The 8th house is just above the western horizon: the part of the sky about to go down. A planet here had perhaps an hour left in view when you were born.
The old writers noticed that and thought it mattered. A planet close to setting is losing its light, which is one of the reasons this house acquired the reputation it has. The geometry came first and the meaning was built on it.
The house systems disagree, and here is how much
An argued cusp, and an unusually consequential one, because the 8th and the 2nd are the money axis. A planet that Placidus puts in the 8th and whole sign puts in the 7th moves from what you share to who you share it with.
If you have ever had two readings disagree about whether something in your chart is about intimacy or about partnership, this is almost always the reason, and neither reader was careless.
