What the 10th house is about
The 10th house is what you are known for. Not the job title necessarily: the thing people would say you are, if asked when you were not in the room.
It is the most public part of the chart and the most visible, and it sits directly opposite the 4th, which is the most private. That axis is the whole question of how much of what you came from you carry into what you become.
Reputation, authority, and the people who had authority over you all live here, which is why the house of career is also the house of your relationship with being in charge.
An empty 10th house is not an empty life
An empty 10th is not a life without a career, and it is a very common finding in the charts of extremely well-known people.
The cusp and its ruler carry it, and here the ruler's house is unusually eloquent. A 10th ruled by a Mercury in the 3rd is known for what it says; a 10th ruled by a Saturn in the 6th is known for turning up.
The sign on the cusp does the colouring
The sign on your 10th cusp is the Midheaven, one of the four angles, and it describes the register of your public self: what you look like from outside, and the kind of standing you are after.
It moves with the clock like the Ascendant, so it needs a real birth time. Where the Ascendant is how you enter a room, the Midheaven is what precedes you into it.
Where the 10th house actually is in the sky
The 10th house begins at the highest point the sky reaches, the meridian: where the Sun stands at local noon. A planet on that cusp was as high as it was going to get on the day you were born.
This is the plainest piece of geometry in the chart. The Midheaven is directly overhead and the IC is directly underfoot, and everything about the public and the private in this axis is built on that one physical fact.
The house systems disagree, and here is how much
The 10th cusp is where the systems divide most consequentially, and this one is worth understanding rather than ignoring. Placidus, Koch, Regiomontanus, Campanus and Porphyry all put the 10th at the Midheaven.
Equal houses does not: it puts the 10th exactly 90 degrees from the Ascendant, so the Midheaven ends up somewhere in the 9th, 10th or 11th. And whole sign puts the tenth sign from your rising sign there. If a reading has told you a different career house from the one you expected, this is why, and it is a real disagreement between traditions rather than a mistake.
