6th house synastry
MODERNA modern technique: twentieth-century astrology.
Planets in your 6th house land on ordinary life: your working day, your health, your habits and the small acts of looking after each other.

What the 6th house is, before anybody lands in it
The 6th house is the least glamorous house in the chart and one of the best predictors of whether two people can actually live alongside each other.
It is the house of routine, work, service and the body's upkeep. An overlay here shows up as the person who is in your days rather than in your evenings, and as the one who notices you are getting ill before you do.
Traditionally it is read as service, which in a relationship means the unglamorous half of love: lifts, prescriptions, the washing up, the appointment somebody made for you.
Their planets in your 6th house
- SunTheir Sun is in your working life. You are more purposeful about ordinary things around them, and the daily routine tends to organise itself around their presence whether or not you intended that.
- MoonThey care for you in practical ways. This contact usually appears as somebody who feeds you, and it is one of the most quietly binding overlays there is.
- MercuryMercury is at home here. Lists, arrangements, logistics, the running of the week. It is the contact behind two people who are good at organising things together.
- VenusThey make the ordinary pleasant. Traditionally associated with enjoying working alongside each other, and with a relationship that is lived mostly in daylight.
- MarsThey put energy into your routine, and they can also disrupt it. Excellent for getting things done, and capable of turning the running of a household into a low grade argument.
- JupiterYour days get easier and more generous. Jupiter here tends to expand what you take on, so the thing to watch is a routine that quietly grows past what fits in a week.
- SaturnDuty arrives. Steady, reliable, and capable of becoming a relationship in which one person is mostly a responsibility. Whether it reads as devotion or as weight depends on what else is in the chart and on what is actually being shared.
- UranusRoutine will not hold. Schedules change, work changes, and the one thing this contact does not produce is a predictable week.
- NeptuneThe practical edges blur. Appointments slip and it is unclear who was supposed to do what. It is also the contact behind real compassion for each other's bad days.
- PlutoHabits are rebuilt from the ground up, including the ones you had stopped noticing. Powerful and not comfortable, and often about control over the ordinary rather than over anything dramatic.
It runs both ways, and the two are different readings
Their planets in your 6th is somebody inside your days. Your planets in their 6th is you inside theirs. In practice one person is usually more woven into the other's routine, and naming which way round it goes is more useful than most aspect readings.
Where both directions are loaded, two lives tend to merge at the level of the calendar. That is one of the plainest signs of a relationship becoming a shared life, and it happens long before anybody uses the word.
What makes an overlay here worth reading
The working planets do the work here: Mercury, Mars, the Moon and Saturn. This is not a house where an outer planet on its own says much.
Three or more personal planets in your 6th is a cluster, and Umbriel names it in a pair reading. It usually shows up as a person who is simply in your week.
What it does not tell you
Nothing in this house is a health prediction. The 6th describes how you look after the body and the day, and a chart has never diagnosed anybody.
Read the 6th beside the 12th, which is opposite it. One is the visible routine and the other is what happens out of sight, and a couple can be excellent at the first and strangers in the second.
A question to sit with

Common questions
What does the 6th house mean in synastry?
It is daily life: work, routine, health and practical care. An overlay here describes somebody who is present in your ordinary days rather than only in the notable ones.
Is 6th house synastry romantic?
Not on the surface. It is traditionally read as service and routine, and it is the house that decides whether two people can live together comfortably once the novelty has worn off.
Does a 6th house overlay mean we would work well together?
Mercury and Mars here are traditionally read as a good working pairing. Whether it is pleasant is a separate question, and Venus and the Moon are the ones that answer it.
