8th house synastry
MODERNA modern technique: twentieth-century astrology.
The 8th house overlay is the one with the reputation: sex, merging, shared money, and the things two people cannot stay unchanged by.

What the 8th house is, before anybody lands in it
The 8th house is what you cannot do on your own terms. What is held jointly, what cannot be decided alone, and what happens to you rather than what you arrange.
In synastry it is read as the room of merging. Somebody with planets here reaches a part of you that other people do not get to, and the usual report is that the intensity arrived early and was not negotiated.
It is also, very practically, the house of shared resources. Debts, inheritances, the joint account. The mystical reputation grew on top of a house that started out administrative.
Their planets in your 8th house
- SunTheir Sun in your deep end. They tend to be the person in front of whom you cannot keep up the usual performance, and being seen at that depth is compelling and exposing at once.
- MoonEmotional merging. Traditionally read as a bond that goes straight past the surface, and as the contact where two people's moods stop being separable.
- MercuryThe conversations go where conversations do not usually go. Secrets, money, fear, the things said at two in the morning. It is intimacy through talking rather than through touch.
- VenusAttraction with depth in it. Traditionally associated with a bond that is difficult to be casual about, and with affection that keeps reaching for more closeness than is comfortable.
- MarsOne of the plainest sexual overlays in the tradition, and a contact with real force in it. Force is not the same as compatibility, and the difference matters more here than in any other house.
- JupiterDepth becomes generous rather than frightening. Traditionally associated with shared resources going well and with a genuine appetite for the other person's inner life.
- SaturnWeight on the deep end. It can look like a bond that will not break and like a slow negotiation over control. This is the house where Saturn is most often described as an obstacle, and an obstacle can be fear, distance, timing or somebody else's life.
- UranusThe depths will not stay still. Sudden closeness, sudden distance, and an intimacy that is hard to build a routine around.
- NeptuneBoundaries dissolve here, which is what Neptune does. Sometimes that is profound closeness. Sometimes it is not seeing clearly yet. Often it is both, on different days.
- PlutoPluto in the house it naturally rules. This is the contact people describe as obsession, and the fuller reading is that nothing between the two of you is allowed to stay on the surface.
It runs both ways, and the two are different readings
Their planets in your 8th means somebody is in your depths. Your planets in their 8th means you are in theirs, and you are the one taking them under rather than the one being taken.
Those are genuinely different experiences and they are often not shared. One person can be undone by a relationship the other person is enjoying, and the overlay run in both directions is one of the few places a chart says so plainly.
What makes an overlay here worth reading
Read the sign on your 8th cusp before the planet that has landed there. The same Pluto contact arrives very differently on a cautious 8th than on one that was always going to go all the way in.
Three or more personal planets in your 8th is a cluster, and Umbriel names it in a pair reading. The app also reads this overlay on its own in the shadow material, in a deliberately darker voice, for readers aged 18 and over who go and look for it.
What it does not tell you
This is the house where the difference between two sentences matters most. “This is very intense” is a description. “This is very good” is a judgement, and nothing in a chart can make it. Umbriel says the first and will not say the second.
Eighth house contacts are common in relationships people describe as fated and in relationships people describe as the hardest thing they have been through. That is the same signature, and if you are in one of them, the astrology is not the thing that decides what to do next.

Common questions
What does 8th house synastry mean?
Somebody's planets are landing in your house of merging, intimacy, shared resources and transformation. It is traditionally read as one of the most intense overlays there is.
Is 8th house synastry a twin flame sign?
Lists on the internet often say so. The pattern is common in intense relationships of many kinds, which is exactly why intensity on its own is not evidence of anything in particular. The twin flame page sets out what would be.
Why does 8th house synastry feel obsessive?
The 8th is traditionally ruled by Pluto, which is associated with depth and compulsion. The same house also covers grief, money and trust, and a relationship loaded here tends to touch all of it.
Is an 8th house overlay good or bad?
It is intense. Whether it is good is not a question a chart can answer, and any page that tells you it is either one is going further than the astrology goes.
