3rd house synastry
MODERNA modern technique: twentieth-century astrology.
Planets in your 3rd house land on the conversation: how this person talks to you, how often, and what your mind does with it.

What the 3rd house is, before anybody lands in it
The 3rd house is the running commentary of a life. Talking, texting, reading, the short trips, the neighbours, the siblings. It is the least grand house in the chart and one of the most used.
An overlay here is the difference between a relationship that is easy to be in on a Tuesday and one that is only good on the big occasions. Most of any relationship is conversation, so most of any relationship happens in this house.
It is also the house where people find out whether they are actually interested in each other, as opposed to interested in how the other person looks or in the story of the meeting.
Their planets in your 3rd house
- SunTheir Sun turns your everyday talk into something that matters to them. You get listened to about small things, which is a kind of attention people underrate until they have had it.
- MoonThe conversation carries feeling. You end up saying things you had not planned to say, and the texting can become the main way the relationship is actually conducted.
- MercuryMercury at home. You follow each other's thinking without translating, finish sentences, and swap the kind of links nobody else would find interesting. The easiest overlay in the set to live with.
- VenusThey are pleasant to talk to and they like the way you think. Traditionally read as an easy friendship even where the rest of the chart is complicated.
- MarsThe talk gets fast, and it sharpens. Debate, teasing, arguing for sport. Fine between two people who enjoy it, and worth naming out loud if only one of you does.
- JupiterThey widen what you talk about. Books you would not have picked up, plans you would not have made. Jupiter here is traditionally associated with a good teacher and a slight tendency to go on.
- SaturnThey take what you say seriously, which is heavier than it sounds. Some people hear it as being corrected and some hear it as finally being read properly, and the difference is mostly tone.
- UranusConversations jump. Ideas arrive sideways and the good ones arrive at midnight. Stimulating, and not restful.
- NeptuneMeaning goes soft at the edges. You each hear what you needed to hear, which is how two people can leave the same conversation with different agreements. Write things down.
- PlutoNothing stays on the surface. This is the contact where one question at the wrong moment opens the whole subject, and where a conversation can change something permanently.
It runs both ways, and the two are different readings
Their planets in your 3rd is somebody moving around in how you think and talk. Your planets in their 3rd is you doing that to them. The two directions produce different complaints and different pleasures, and most couples only ever describe one of them.
Where both directions are busy, the pair are usually in constant contact. That is lovely, and it is also the shape where two people can talk a difficulty into existence as easily as they talk one away.
What makes an overlay here worth reading
In this house it is Mercury, the Moon and Mars that do most of the work. Outer planets in the 3rd colour the tone rather than drive the traffic.
A single planet here is a note about how you two talk. Three or more of somebody's personal planets in your 3rd is a cluster, and at that point the conversation is a main feature of the relationship rather than a background one.
What it does not tell you
A quiet 3rd house does not mean you have nothing to say to each other. Plenty of long relationships run their conversation through aspects rather than overlays, and the chart has several ways of saying the same thing.
It is worth reading this house against the 9th, which is opposite it. The 3rd is the near conversation and the 9th is the large one, and a couple can be excellent at one and lost in the other.

Common questions
What does the 3rd house mean in synastry?
It is the everyday conversation between two people: talking, texting, ideas, humour and the ordinary contact that fills most of a relationship.
Is 3rd house synastry important for compatibility?
It is easy to underrate and hard to do without. Attraction lives elsewhere in the chart, and the daily liveability of a relationship is very often described here.
Does Mercury in the 3rd house mean we think alike?
It is traditionally read as an easy meeting of minds, and it describes a shared wavelength rather than agreement. Two people can follow each other perfectly and still want different things.
